Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Here is where I stand on things. If TL/dr, scroll on by. But I have a beach to get to this PM and I have been catching up on posts on here this AM.

The lesson with the TV ruckus is that coaches and leaders come and go, but the institution and programs remain and should be what is the most important to support. I am very thankful for what Tony did and will always have great memories. But the Vols are still and will always be the most important. The guys that put on those unis and work behind the scenes to give their all for Tennessee and return to campus to support those that follow - those are the legends and who we should support and lift up. Even Tony will tell you that.

For whatever reasons he had he moved on to MLB and a shot to do something that has never been attempted before. It really doesn't matter what the circumstances were. Tip of the cap to him and hope it works out well. But I do not care one iota about San Francisco and not all that much about MLB except for Vols making their way there. I care about Vols and our sports.

IMO, the vitriol about DW is undeserved. He is doing the best job he can for Tennessee. No coach or player is more important than a program. Having sat in LNS last season, I could see the vision he wanted built with Tony's input. It is something else - just outstanding for that small of footprint while remaining in the middle of the campus for a program that historically loses money. DW made that $100+ M improvement happen. I have spent time with the fellow who is over the maintenance of the field itself - an orange blooded local guy who has made a career of it right there on that campus - from the grass and dirt to the turf and dirt today. He made sure that Tony received the exact field prep he wanted. There are many dedicated Vol employees who make sure the programs have what they need. The bucks stops with DW with all of them as well. You can hear and see that all of them are rowing in the same direction now, if they don't they are gone. The push is for the best fan experience possible while fielding the best teams possible. That has not always been the case. Randy, Donde and Danny make a great team in getting things done.

The real test about DW is what he does with his guy - Josh Heupel. The coaching staff has needed improvements for a couple of years. Heup did not make them on his own. It is on DW to make sure he does this offseason. On that issue, DW can be fairly judged.

Kim is a grand slam hire he made. All he has to do is support Rick and Karen. Hopefully Josh interviews well and has a good plan - then alls well that ends well for baseball. I could see Josh ending up being a lifer if it all goes as desired. Nobody yet knows if some big name surfaces with a desire for the job that will be a no brainer. Doubtful, but possible. Will see.

I believe there were issues between DW and TV. I think the San Fran job was Tony's way out of Knoxville and the plan was to keep the rift between them quiet. There were just too many former players/friends close to Tony that knew how the 2 felt about each other and posted on social media about it. Tony is a cool guy but his blood runs hot and if Danny had "pushed his buttons", I could see TV getting into it with DW. Neither one of them seem like the type to just let it go.

I'll say this, DW sounded like a politician during that press conference. He's a slick talker and for that, I would believe what Tony says over Danny anytime.

I will miss Tony Vitello. He opened my eyes to college baseball and I appreciate him for what he did for UT. I believe he loved his players, the fans, and Knoxville. I also think he is a genuinely honorable man. I'll consider him a VFL.
I’ve slept on it and two things have come to mind;
1-Tony leaves a legacy of wins, natty and putting UT baseball on top
2-Tony leaves a lasting legacy of transforming Lindsey Nelson into one of the top stadiums in college baseball
It was a fun ride,thank you CTV🫡👊🏻🍊

I'll say what I pretty much said in the baseball forum, I don't have ill will toward DW for Tony leaving. People can claim whatever they want about the relationship between DW and Tony, but the fact is, Tony was given a chance to make history. He left for a job in the Major Leagues, for a team rich with baseball history. It's not like he left for another college program, or the minors, or even a truly crappy MLB team. I'm not positive he would have stayed even if he and DW were best friends.

That said, I will be paying attention to where DW goes from here. I personally think it should be Elander, but if it's not Elander, it needs to be someone proven, not an up and comer. Picking some other up and comer other than Elander would be a slap in the face to these players, and a large portion of the fanbase. DW also needs to stay dedicated to updating LNS and keeping baseball one of the top programs in the country. If baseball is allowed to die again, then yeah, I'll be on the anti-DW bus. Hell, I'll unpack my torch and pitchfork and lead the mob myself.

California in general is a sh!thole. I was there in the 70's and it was perfect, San Diego was amazing. I have kin there and today it is it is total garbage and expensive ass He!!. The only real problem with California is that it is full of Californians, including my kin.
Pretty well sums up my thoughts as well, having been employed by companies there as well as many business trips there for decades before retirement. It is shared by my next door retired neighbors who escaped from there a few years back. One is a native and the other was there for over 30 years. They think they are in heaven now in East TN.

Nevermind it's not worth the argument....

Actually there's plenty of good people in the Baseball Forum, they respect and love the football just as much as everyone else. Just as this thread does if someone new arrives and flies in like a ball of fire of course their going to strike back..

Yesterday was a perfect example, the Baseball fans were venting and they should've been able to
If they wanted to play the blame game so be it, like it’s not done in every forum..lastly I noticed a lot of people in the Baseball Forum that has never posted in the forum before. Hell most of them probably didn't know Tennessee had a baseball program til 2020..
Don’t be a tease! I’m not sure what argument you think you avoided, but I’d love to hear it.

I don’t disagree with anything you said fwiw.

Referencing your last paragraph, I’m sure that’s true. Not sure what the point is though. I don’t really go in the baseball forum outside of baseball season typically, as my focus is on the in-session sport, and admittedly I did not go in there before Tony, because I didn’t have much of a history of fanhood tied to the program. The extent of my tenn baseball fanhood was we would go during college with a cooler of beers because it was free and nobody cared. We had fun. Can’t say I knew any of the players names though. I’m getting the feeling you’re saying people like that should stay in the other forums, which is kind of my point. What’s with the segregation? It’s an odd phenomena. I get that notion if people pop into a forum only to be negative, but when thats not the case, why do people shun their fellow Vols and other programs?

Yall ever get the sense that the Tennesseee fan base can be pretty segregated? Like, I’m pretty sure there are plenty of people who only live in say the baseball forum or lady vols forum. And they all seem to hate the other programs or at least not respect them. It’s weird.
Yep, and don't have the emotional intelligence to understand that the AD has to manage the entire program and not just their pet. It's pitiful and does the overall athletic department and brand no good. Love Tony and all he did for the Vols but his ego is about to take a massive hit as he will be just another person in SF. I wish him the best but have a hard time believing someone like Elander can't win a lot of games with the resources we are putting into baseball. Logical to think we take a step back but baseball is a wonky sport and is about getting hot come tournament time. I'm glad we are trying to win in everything and with that strategy you have to make a compromise. The crazy thing to me is that in MLB, Tony is going to be at a much bigger competitive disadvantage than he was here. I'm a Vol and want all of our athletes to have a chance to win at the highest level including the women. Go Vols!

UT - 17
Houston - 8

Interesting game in so many ways....................

* 1st game since the deaths of assistant coaches Bob Jones, Charley Rash, and Bill Majors the Monday before the game.
* 1st Black football player (Houston's Warren McVea) to play a game on a SEC campus.
* 1st use of the Veer-T Offense (Bill Yeoman Houston HC)

Tony was a dynamic stud of a baseball coach and made it must see TV. I loved having him here and wish he had stayed but he got a great opportunity to chase a dream. Not sure why people feel the need to blame our AD who has given him a ton of resources. Sometimes talented people get hired for a perceived better opportunity. Hopefully people will settle down and be a little more rational in the coming days. I still think it's likely he hires Elander but I certainly don't know anything. It will be very easy to get a great coach but there is only one Tony V.
It is my experience that no one is unreplaceable and great teams are more than one person. When asked (many times) "What are you going to do now that So in So is leaving?" I responded every time, "They make more every year." And they did.

Ole Miss vs Oklahoma - who we rooting for?

I think I want Oklahoma to win to give ole Miss a second loss, with the hopes we can handle ou next week. It would also give us a ranked win, which we don’t have.

Counter argument would be an Oklahoma loss means they’re not that good and makes our gsme next week seem easier. They do seem to have figured their run game out.
I'm for Oklahoma.

There is a reason people are fleeing that state, just like rats running from a burning barn. I wish these states were better so these people would stop invading my space and bugging the crap out of me.
