Danny said in his press conference he didnt choose Elander to be interim bc he didnt want him to have to deal with the day to day stuff while being a candidate. He's not picking Elander! And even worse, he literally told us that he doesnt talk much with his head coaches, and never talks to the assistants. Thats an insane thing to say as an AD!

I don’t know what syrup yer slurping. I think Elander should get first dibs assuming Frank doesn’t want the job and by all accounts…I haven’t poo poo’ed any names. I’m looking around, weird time for a baseball coach to leave…in fact, it’s unprecedented to get a major league job straight out of the college ranks.

Let’s hear it, who’s your choice?

I mean, prolly the same reason why he sent Justin Franks (i.e. someone we've never even heard of) to go talk to him . Two things can be true at the same time : Danny White should be given credit for finding resources/commitments to build the stadium, for keeping Tony after 24' AND that a strained relationship (for whatever reason) contributed to Tony's decision to leave. It's not an either/or scenario.

Welp, unfortunately. That’s off the table my friend. I just tend to look for a bright side, just my nature. I don’t know what will be decided, there’s some coaches out there, CTV made the job an attractive one, we’ll see.

There is no denying the recruiting. That’s what I meant. We have to keep the class and if we do, we’re okay. Sorry if I didn’t state it clearly.

Money is the only thing that attracts pro players. Now for college money is still important but Tony's I got talent and all the guys he got drafted was also key to his success. I don't know if all these rumors are true or not about flirting with other colleges or not. But no question he had many demands and most were meet . So I appreciate what he accomplished here but was a big headache for the administration. Good luck and move on.

It’s what the childish necks in this fanbase do. They self destruct. And they might just run off the primary reason that UT athletics are going through its most successful period in history. All because they never learned how to deal with their emotions in an adult manner.

Not passing any judgements on DW until we see how he handles this. Let's be honest. DW and Tony could have been the best of friends and Tony may still have chosen to take this shot. It's Major League Baseball. It's the San Francisco Giants. Not a Giants fan (Go Braves), but it's a MLB team with a ton of history. He's not going to coach the Savannah Bananas or some minor league team or even a sucky team like the Angels. The shot he's getting is unprecedented. So I don't put blame on DW. It's what he does from here that will show me how he views baseball. Is there a coaching search, or does he do the logical thing and make Elander coach? Former players certainly want Elander to get his shot. Even guys who didn't play for Tony. I saw where Burke endorsed him. Does DW remain committed to baseball and updating LNS? Does he foster an environment to keep us a top program? We'll see what happens, and that is what DW will ultimately bear the responsibility for.

I agree and I don't think this job is that high up with all the toxicity going around with the fan base and why Tony left. I mean we are trying to pull away a proven winner somewhere, why would walk into this mess? I mean not knowing if the players here will stay past next season. Plus you are following in the steps of Tony V who is beloved by everyone here. Seems like impossible shoes to fill. Which is why we end up With Elander, which is who I want. Would like to see if he can keep this thing on the tracks.

After sleeping on the news yesterday, I am still bummed out.

I am admittedly a newer fan. I didn’t really care about baseball growing up or into adulthood. After the 2021 NCAA basketball tournament ended, I commented to a buddy that there will be zero sports to watch until football season. He told me you need to check out TN baseball, they are fun to watch and Coach Vitello is an animal. So, I checked it out and immediately fell in love with the energy, swagger and attitude of the team and CTV it was infectious and I went all in.

I loved that he wasn't afraid to fight for his guys and for the program. While some outside the state saw that as arrogance and disrespect. Every year’s teams and CTV embraced being the "villain" role, and I absolutely loved it.

I am hoping Elander gets the job, because I don’t think any other coach will bring the attitude, swagger and energy to the program that CTV and his staff did. Most of the coaches are boring with no personality.

Not to mention he's the exact 'type' DW normally looks for. I don't know why you go through the expense and drama of a search if he's the guy.

(Also...if I'm paying you 3M on a perpetual contract as an AD, I would expect you have enough knowledge of your coaching staffs to know who your high performer/future HCs are on them. A) to help advance their careers and develop leadership and B) for cases such as this where you could promote from within an already successful organization. I do not expect you to shunt that responsibility off to some assistant AD and have no functional knowledge of who is there when crunch time comes. Even if that is too big of an ask, I especially would expect you to know that on your top 3 or 4 teams, particularly the one experiencing the most growth and visibility.)

I’m replying to this particular post just because it’s the one I’m reading at the moment, but this is directed more broadly.

I think some posters here are underestimating the scale of UTAD and therefore the nature of Danny White’s role. This is a business with ~$234M flowing through it annually. Who knows how many employees work in the AD… a lot. He’s got 15 head coaches. But his main role is not actually hand-holding the coaches or being directly involved in their sports. He has to spend time showing up and being visible around all these sports to some degree, but his main role is administrative oversight of the whole business operation, including fundraising but also just day-to-day management of running an organization that large. He has to delegate.

I don’t know what the right answer is because I’ve never been in his position exactly, and I did find it interesting to learn that he maybe didn’t even have much a relationship with Tony at all, but I think this idea that he would just pal around with the head coaches is a little unrealistic.

I don’t think Danny had much of a choice to give Tony Vitello those resources and get the stadium built. He had a several multi millionaire boosters on his side that contribute to the AD outside of baseball. They have buildings named after them on campus.
