Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Confirmed)

I wonder…why did DW make TV the 2nd highest paid coach in college baseball, agree to build his field of dreams, keep him from going to aTm twice, and basically bend over backwards to keep him at UT in the face of every outside threat of TV leaving for the last 3-4 years…

Then when SF calls this week, just decide to let him walk?

There is zero logic to that belief.
Some people are just angry or upset (like I am), and they have become illogical.

The truth is simple: TV decided to chase the highest accolade as a baseball coach. He wants to coach in the Bigs and win a World Series. Can't fault him for that.

Did you even listen to danny dollars presser? He is above talking to coaches - his lieutenants do.
I’m personally a relationships guy. Maybe Danny isn’t. Maybe he thinks it clouds his judgement. I dont know. But whatever he’s been doing has been working. I don’t know that he’s being disingenuous. And I personally have no knowledge or reason to distrust him besides message board rumor so I’m gonna hope it’s elander and hope it was a situation where the best effort was made and it was what it was.

If not now then when? Stick around, what’s to gain? He’s already a legend here. Why not chase it, he is young enough to chase the thing! Good on him. Be happy we got to see it at all. I consider myself lucky!

You didn’t even read or comprehend my post. The numbers establish that baseball at TN lost about 3.5 million less than women’s basketball. Revenue is meaningless. Do your homework - google it - the are reports out there.

And further to the point that you fail to comprehend my post is about title IX. Truly title IX is about treating female and make college scholarship athletes the same. Revenue sharing is almost the exact opposite of that - TN paying football the lion’s share of revenue share is not equality, rather a reflection of the revenue generation.

It won’t take too long for some hungry class action lawyers blow that bs wide open. How the he’ll do you think the House settlement came about? It sure as hell did not come for the generosity of the NCAA.

I don’t play an attorney on TV and sure as hell don’t stay at holiday inns.
If it’s true that women’s bball makes more and he were to give them less, it would appear even more anti-women.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of players he attracts to the Giants with some of the relationships that he has fostered over the years with either high profile players, ie Scherzer is a free agent after this season, or prospects that he's familiar with from either college or high school.

It seems like all of the ire in this thread today (and at least some of the rumblings attributed to Tony) ultimately centers around rev share — and specifically feeling upset that women’s basketball is going to get $900k of rev share money while baseball only gets $750k. Patrick is a broken record in this thread about women’s basketball losing $7M compared to $3.7M for baseball (Patrick said $3.2M, but I believe the actual figure is $3.7M). What goes unmentioned, of course, is that baseball actually loses more money every year than every other sport on campus except for track… and all of those other sports (that lose less money than baseball) are getting a combined $150k rev share.

For those (Tony perhaps among them) who are just mad because they think baseball “deserves” more, reality is just more complicated than that. I’m not really trying to be Team Danny here, but Danny White can’t just hand out Monopoly money — he has to deal with the complicated reality.

I hate the idea of rev share for this very reason — more than ever before you’re now going to have the baseball team (for example) trying to take from other sports. It’s just an ironic icing on the cake that baseball loses more money than almost every other sport at UT.

This is coming from someone who has been a big supporter of Tony and baseball… but I’m also a supporter of all Vol sports, including Olympic sports.

Bingo.

No, its a fact. I get that you are angry, and you can certainly block me if you like out of frustration, but the facts are that DW did a lot to help Tony Vitello while he was here. You cannot refute that Tony was well compensated, had a funded NIL collective to help recruit top talent, and got an expensive stadium upgrade to help the growing support for our baseball program. But by all means, go ahead and continue your little tizzy fit against an AD who helped revive our overall brand just because you hate the high ticket prices or whatever your real agenda is.
I don't think there is much knowledge here, or appreciation, or both, for the job TV just accepted. I'm sorry - he was taking that job even if he and DW got along great. I've said this a few other times across different forums, but this is the equivalent of the best college football coach accepting the head coaching job for a team like the Pittsburgh Steelers or Green Bay Packers.

If TV took another college job, or a lower-tier MLB job, then I'd be right there blaming the poor relationship he and DW apparently had as playing a big role in him leaving. This is a premier MLB job he just accepted, and he'll have his pick of another college job regardless of how poorly it goes in SF.

I think this is a very fair discussion and I don’t pretend to have all the financials at my fingertips. That said…

Football is a known commodity. They keep shrinking the stadium, charging as much as possible so there are more amenities for the folks that can afford it. Basketball, in the case of men’s and women’s, is also a known commodity, people will pay what they can to be in the building for a winner, but there’s only so many seats and most are taken by season ticket holders and if I’m admin. I’d like it that way too.

Baseball, even compared to softball is an outlier and I said it for a very long time.

College baseball has room to grow. ESPN said so. No other sport was as uniquely situated as the marriage of UT baseball, CTV and ESPN needing something for programming, advertising.

Don’t take my word for it. The stadium he wanted, he got, long overdue as it was.

Next time I have the opportunity to buy Tennessee Baseball tix. I’m gonna.

GBO!!!

I wish him luck, but I don't follow the MLB so you all will have to let me know how good or bad it goes.

As for the Vols Baseball, I wonder if a new coach will bring a different attitude - does the Daddy hat stay or go?

What are you talking about. Women’s bball at TN lost much more money than baseball which includes incoming revenue. Women’s bball doesn’t make more - it loses more but both lose money. Rev share is a fictional load of garbage. Only sports on most campuses that actually make money are football and men’s basketball. Virtually every other sport loses money except for a few baseball programs around the country. And frankly most athletic departments lose money and don’t turn a profit.

For you danny dollar water carriers - those that keep receipts.

Here’s one for you - when the dust settles before next season (2026) both Elander and Frank will be gone. I suspect Frank will retire and had Tony V’s departure followed the normal track at the close of season, Elander would have probably gotten a head coaching gig at some other program. Elander and Frank are far too attached to Tony V for Danny dollar to allow them to remain here and the new hire will bring in his own staff.

You just can’t replicate what Tony V did here - it was a Herculean lift.

TN baseball fans and casuals have had the opportunity to see Tony V take TN baseball to the Mount Everest of college baseball - but stick around because you are getting ready to see it crumble into obscurity.
