Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I’ll say this: if he passes on Elander, I’m blaming Danny. That’s 100% under Danny’s control.
How many assistants take over for a legend and have success? It's super rare. The "coach in waiting" almost never works. That doesn't mean he can't do a good job, but it would be irresponsible to just hand it over to him without looking at all the options first.

If this was July? 100%.

It’s late October.

I’ve posted nearly exactly what you posted this week during all the commotion, so I don’t disagree with the overall point. But you have to take that chance in the situation you’ve been put in.

I'm really surprised, and not upset that he's gone. I dont get it. By all accounts everything looked good. It feels like Tony was making demands, and demands werent met. And he took a paycut. I think TN made a business decision. I dont think Tony made the best decision, but only he knows that. I feel like he had everything here. But, wish him luck.
What’s not to understand about getting a promotion to The Show? This isn’t rocket science

Just feels like ya don't have much to lose with Elander being promoted.

Lower salary because first time HC, build in incentives to bump it to keep him happy until year 3 or so when you can look at an extension. If it works out great, you've kept the program moving at a discount while finishing the stadium rebuild.

If it's bad well you can give him until the stadium rebuild is done and then part ways with a brand new "sleeping giant" and top tier baseball venue to pitch for the new HC.

Elander is the secret sauce. Vitello just got all the credit. . .
Pretty much every coach is only as good as his staff. Vitello has surrounded himself with good people and no one coach is irreplaceable. Getting the thing going or rebuilding has a lot to do with the head man but once it's going a good replacement can keep it going, a bad choice could sink it though.
TV deserves a lot of credit for building the program but it doesn't mean the program goes with him. I wish hin all the best but pro ball is a different animal. Pro ball players are motivated totally differently, in the majors the ballplayers have the control not the manager.

Could also be that he's a single guy approaching his 50s that doesn't think he has the time to achieve some personal life stuff outside of baseball with the time he has to invest in recruiting? I know a lot of folks are going to run with rumors of conflict between TV and DW, but there could be some very understandable personal reasons TV has for taking the SF job.
Well C-Low is reporting that White and Tony haven't spoken in months. Sounds like Basilio may have been right all along.

This isn’t like moving from a college football job to the NFL. The difference in popularity between college baseball and professional baseball is astronomical. I’ve been a UT fan since birth, but if I were UT’s head coach, I’d still jump at the opportunity to manage in the MLB. This is a dream come true for any baseball coach.

Sad to see Tony go. Grateful for all he did. Will miss all that he meant to the program and the community. Hopeful that Tony will succeed with the Giants and the baseball program continues to have success. If Danny White is smart, he hires Elander. If he wants to feed the notion that he helped contribute to Vitello's departure, hire someone else and watch this fanbase begin to turn on him.

I wonder if people appreciate that Elander is Recruiting Coordinator. Tony is obviously as involved as any coach in the country with recruiting but one of Elander's best attributes is his recruiting abilty, and the resources to continue to win in the portal and recruit at a high-level are already being invested. There's always a silver lining. Also, the pressure will clearly be on Josh pretty immediately to continue to win at a high level. The roster is already there.

Chris Burke just said on the D1 Baseball reaction show that “There is just no way this was exclusively about the opportunity with the Giants.”

Kendall Rogers agreed with him and then said he heard similar things.
Burke and Rogers have no axe to grind against DW.

I honestly think DW may have fumbled this one.

Burke and Rogers wouldn’t BS people because they don’t like Danny White.

Exactly. You now have Trey Wallace, Tony Basilio, Chris Burke, and Kendall Rogers all implying there were issues in the AD but because Basilio is the most vocal about it people don’t want to believe it.

I am hearing that DW wants to hire from outside. I would not go that route if I were him.
Egos are astronomical when it comes to this level. I'm sure Danny wants to get credit for his success at hiring. Danny's done well so far but he's replaced coaches that were dumpster fires. He's now going to have to replace a national championship winning coach. We'll see how that works for him.
