I think voters have noticed we can’t score.

SEC

LOCK — Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Arkansas
BUBBLE — South Carolina, Mississippi State, LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Auburn, Texas A&M

With one match day left in the regular season, it looks like a good chunk of this year’s bubble intrigue is going to come from the SEC. Vanderbilt doesn’t have its league title destiny in its own hands but still looks pretty well placed to make a run at a top two seed, aided by a weekend sweep against Mississippi State and Tennessee. They can make up even more ground with South Carolina as Sunday’s opponent, though they might also need to do some damage in Pensacola.

Arkansas still controls its destiny in the SEC title push, but that’s more a result of rivals dropping points this past Sunday, as Tennessee and Georgia couldn’t win to take advantage of the Razorbacks’ shock draw at Missouri. Oklahoma won’t be a pushover on Sunday, as the Sooners are still right on the NCAA bubble, and I suspect more dropped points won’t be shrugged off as easily in the last round of the season.

Tennessee endured a brutal week that likely killed off their SEC title hopes and may have also submarined their top two seed ambitions. A draw with Florida and loss to Vanderbilt leaves them fourth in the table and needing a mathematical miracle to claim a share of the title. The Vandy loss may be the killer though, as it boosted the Dores into the top ten of the RPI while giving UT a head-to-head loss against a high seed rival. Regardless of Sunday’s outcome against Alabama, the Vols may need a deep run in Pensacola to revive their top two seed hopes.

The next chunk of teams include Mississippi State as the safest team bubble-wise, likely joined by Georgia, and perhaps LSU and South Carolina in teams feeling relatively safe going into the conference tournament. I wouldn’t say the Tigers and Gamecocks are totally safe yet, but time is running out to drop down the pecking order, so they should be fine barring a wild conference tournament season. Wins are needed to firm up a seed and a first round home game though.

The bubble truly begins with Florida, Oklahoma, and Alabama in the SEC. The Gators might be most imperiled, as they aren’t even guaranteed a spot in the conference tournament yet, with Auburn and potentially Texas A&M able to swoop in at the last. There’s the very real possibility that a loss to LSU on Sunday would knock the Gators out of the RPI Top 60, which would effectively be curtains for them if they missed out on Pensacola. There’s also the scenario of losing to LSU, making the conference tournament, but losing their opening match and finishing below the .500 cutline. Main message? Get a result and breathe a little easier.

Oklahoma probably likes its odds if in a bubble situation with Florida and Alabama given the head-to-head wins, but the Sooners are also a team with just one Top 50 win, that coming over the Tide. The draw with Tennessee helps, and I think OU would be in if the field was settled today. But they also could be vulnerable if the bubble shrinks, so the Sooners will likely be rooting for a lot of chalk in conference tournaments.

Alabama finds itself in a bit of the same predicament as OU, but as noted has the H2H loss against the Sooners. Just one RPI Top 50 win, at LSU, could make for a tough case if the bubble shrinks, even with a draw at Duke also on the ledger. A result against Tennessee likely lifts weight off of Bama’s shoulders, but a loss and an early exit in Pensacola will not make for a sedate week in Tuscaloosa.

Kentucky is going to be a very interesting case for the selection committee. The Wildcats are currently out of the RPI Top 57, which usually equals no chance, but they also have a pair of RPI Top 50 wins, which is more than a lot of bubble rivals can argue. But nothing is overwhelming in terms of value, and the non-conference RPI is hanging around their neck like an anchor. There’s also the small matter of winning just one of their last five matches. In effect, it makes the Texas A&M finale an almost must win situation, though a win in Pensacola may also be needed to really feel good about their fate.

Auburn and Texas A&M are both scrambling for the last spot in Pensacola. With their draw of final opponents in the league, I suspect both will need to win at least one game in the SEC Tournament and potentially multiple games to get in the good graces of the bubble. Before thinking about that though, there’s the matter of just getting to the beach, which could take a win on Sunday.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --The No. 12/14 Tennessee soccer team will round out its regular season slate with a Sunday afternoon matchup against Alabama.

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET and will be streamed on SEC Network+ with Tori Beeler-Watson and Charley Collier on the call.

Admission is free for all preseason and regular-season soccer matches. For fans planning to attend, note that Tennessee's clear bag policy will be in effect again this season. Regal Soccer Stadium will be a cashless venue for both concessions and the VolShop this season as well.

The Big Orange look to bounce back after suffering a 2-0 loss on the road to Vanderbilt last time out. The Lady Vols are unbeaten on Rocky Top this season, boasting a 6-0-1 record and outscoring opponents 17-1 on their home turf. Tennessee will look to secure a spot in the top four of the SEC standings following the final matchup, as the top four teams receive first-round byes in the SEC Tournament, which runs from Nov. 2-9 in Pensacola, Florida, following the conclusion of the regular season. UT currently sits fourth in the SEC with 17 conference points.

MATCHUP HISTORY: Sunday marks the 25th meeting between Tennessee and Alabama. The Lady Vols lead the all-time series 13-9-2. The teams played to a 2-2 draw last season in Tuscaloosa, ending Alabama's three-match winning streak in the series. Tennessee's longest run came from 1999 to 2007, when it won seven straight.

SCOUTING THE CRIMSON TIDE: Alabama (10-6-1, 4-5-0) has dropped its last two matches against No. 11 Arkansas and Mississippi State. Additionally, the Tide currently sit tied for ninth in the SEC standings with 12 points. Gianna Paul, who is the Alabama record holder with 35 career goals, 251 career shots and 103 career shots on goal, and leads the Tide in goals scored this year with nine. UA has scored 37 goals on the season with 35 assists.

LOCKDOWN DEFENSE: Tennessee's defense has been dominant from the start of the season, setting the tone for the team's success. Center backs Ally Brown and Leah Klurman were both named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's midseason Top 100, ranked No. 14 and No. 26, respectively. Goalkeeper Cayden Norris joined them on the list at No. 34 and was named to the Hermann Trophy Midseason Watchlist, forming the core of a back line that has surrendered just seven goals in 15 matches. The Lady Vols' goals-against average of 0.438 is the third lowest in the nation. Outside backs Kennedy Price, Sydney Miller, and Milee Zychhave played key roles as well, helping Tennessee open the season with seven straight shutouts. In total, the defense has recorded 12 clean sheets — tied the most in the nation.

STAYART STANDS OUT: Redshirt senior Jenna Stayart has emerged as a key contributor for Tennessee, leading the team in total points with five goals and three assists—both career highs. She has started 15 matches this season and netted two game-winners while controlling the midfield. Stayart's strong play has anchored a Lady Vols squad boasting a plus-25 goal differential. Stayart was selected to represent Tennessee on the 2025 SEC Soccer Community Service Team.
