Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Confirmed)

Tying the money to the revenue generated by each sport is so shortsighted.

I have coffee in the am with a former Alabama administrator. He has talked regularly about Bama’s growth as a university, and their expanding out-of-state enrollment. He gives credit where he thinks it is due: to Nick Saban and the massive exposure/notoriety of the football program. He says that success is worth so much more to the University recruitment than anything else Bama has done over the years.

These guys at that table also know two coaches at the University of Tennessee: Rick Barnes, because of his Clemson years fighting with Dean Smith (remember, I am in central NC), and Tony Vitello, because college baseball, at it’s peak, is the only game in town.

Vitellius success is worth more to the University overall than it is in terms of revenue generated to the Athletic Department.

Every NCAA game runs a “Come to Tennessee” ad. Every other sporting event on TV advertises for the University when the upcoming TV schedule is shown….

I have already gotten more comment this morning wearing the logo’d pullover in the picture attached than I got all last Saturday when wearing Tennessee football gear. And this is in Atlanta, during football season!

Huge mistake to gamble with the University exposure generated by the success of the baseball program these last few years.

Sure, there is truth to this. I grew up playing baseball and not football and started watching much more when TV was hired.

That said, football is still that catalyst for UT. I am in West TN, and when UT football is good, you get people talking to you all the time in stores and out and about. Football brings in people who are fans of smaller local schools but also root for the state school. UT enrollment is up, too, and football has been a big driver. Baseball does not do that.

Please don't take this as a slight to baseball either because I want TV here for years and love passing the time in the late spring and summer watching UT baseball. I even took my boys to a fall game in Millington several years ago.

It’s kinda odd.. if it was really a done deal and with all the leaks out there one way or the other you would think they would just have announced it by now this morning already.. so I’ll go as far to say he hadn't accepted this job offer Saturday or Sunday for sure
Only 11 am in Cali right now. They just waking up.
