Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Confirmed)

Tying the money to the revenue generated by each sport is so shortsighted.

I have coffee in the am with a former Alabama administrator. He has talked regularly about Bama’s growth as a university, and their expanding out-of-state enrollment. He gives credit where he thinks it is due: to Nick Saban and the massive exposure/notoriety of the football program. He says that success is worth so much more to the University recruitment than anything else Bama has done over the years.

These guys at that table also know two coaches at the University of Tennessee: Rick Barnes, because of his Clemson years fighting with Dean Smith (remember, I am in central NC), and Tony Vitello, because college baseball, at it’s peak, is the only game in town.

Vitellius success is worth more to the University overall than it is in terms of revenue generated to the Athletic Department.

Every NCAA game runs a “Come to Tennessee” ad. Every other sporting event on TV advertises for the University when the upcoming TV schedule is shown….

I have already gotten more comment this morning wearing the logo’d pullover in the picture attached than I got all last Saturday when wearing Tennessee football gear. And this is in Atlanta, during football season!

Huge mistake to gamble with the University exposure generated by the success of the baseball program these last few years.

Well, I quit watching baseball when it stopped being the sport I grew up with. (Starting pitcher as protagonist, and great balance between hitting and pitching.) The only baseball I watch is the Vols, and only because of what Tony's made it.

I also watch no women's basketball unless the Lady Vols are involved. It is dull next to the men's game. But I DO watch the Lady Vols, and have for years. And, for me, Kim's teams so far have been immensely entertaining (i.e. "watchable ").
Agreed. I even bought LV basketball season tix this year—all because of what Kim Caldwell has started. I never thought that would happen. I’m baseball first followed by football, basketball, and LV basketball.

PS. No more pro sports for me although college is getting closer each day.

Tony was once asked in an interview, and this was a couple of years before he won the 'ship, what sort of legacy he wanted to leave when all is said and done. He pointed specifically to what Coach K did at Duke and said that that was the ideal. That's the goal, you know? That immediately struck me as far as what Tony's ambitions were and it's stuck with me ever since. I think I've mentioned it a couple of times on here in the past.

No one took money away from baseball and gave it to women's basketball.

The plan for the distribution of revenue was based on the revenue each sport generates for the University. Tony's argument is that baseball is being severly undervalued right now and that the league needs to use their enormous leverage to go back to ESPN and get a better TV deal. He's not even complaining about how much Lady Vols Basketball is getting. He's complaining because baseball's portion of the revenue is based on outdated data that shouldn't apply to the current reality of college sports and the peerless popularity of the SEC.
That’s likely how UT decided to distribute the $20.5M and makes logical sense. It’s certainly a prudent and a less litigious approach considering likely Title IX challenges despite the DOJ saying otherwise. However, schools are allowed to distribute Rev share funds as they want. Baseball is 4th at TN but is 3rd elsewhere in the distribution of funds. Of course, CTV is going to push for a higher allocation of funds.

Finally the truth is told. Thank you. I saw the payout distribution when the NCAA settlement was finalized and I remember that baseball and women's basketball were basically even in Nil money. Lady Vol basketball got a big boost when Adidas became our shoe company not because of uneven distribution, but because Candace has already signed some high school players of which we have already got a commitment from one of them with a Adidas deal.

Claim is Danny shorted Tony on NIL money and gave it to Coach Caldwell. Totally a rumor which some believe and some don't so the ones who do want to fire Danny White.

From the looks of attendance and revenue looks like Nil should've been distributed evenly to the two sports. Men's basketball and Football should've been the top two with of course Football leaving everyone in the dust.

FYI - Attendance for TN Baseball this past season was 210,618 whereas Lady Vols Basketball (2024-2025 season) was 181,002. That's about a 15% difference. TN Women's Basketball (2023-2024 Fiscal Year) lost a cool 7 million clams.....AI reports that for the 2023-2024 Fiscal Year TN Baseball did not have an operating loss.

More money should go to TN Baseball - Tony is a generational coach who proved who can actually win championships!

Believe Baseball and Softball split the crumbs left over..
