Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Confirmed)

I wish CTV wasn’t privy to what Arkansas is allocating for women’s basketball for revenue sharing. Of course TN will allocate more dollars to LV basketball, and Arkansas will simply apply the absolute minimum. It’s just another unnecessary irritant to CTV
I get the slight, but every program benefits from other programs doing well. TV is always at football and basketball games because they are good. Other programs help recruit, too.

I think you know deep down that the fact that he didn't squash it 2 weeks ago, and especially that he hasn't squashed it this weekend tells you he is, or at least was leaning towards taking it and that it wasn't just SF interest.

Now, the fact that he hasn't yet accepted it could be taken any number of ways (negotiations, second thoughts, etc), but in hindsight, this was never just nothing.
Any coach worth their muster would use this situation to leverage their current situation. That’s just business. Silence means nothing, as does any report not directly from the giants organization or university of Tennessee athletic department.

Candace Parker works for Adidas, of course more money will be given to Lady Vols Basketball.

What I've learned from all this:

1. Lot of folks are bigger fans of CTV than Vol Baseball or even the university in general. I've been following Vol Baseball since the Delmonico years, and I'll be here long after Tony V or whoever is long gone.

2. Folks don't actually think what Tony V has built is sustainable if he isn't here, which is kind of insulting to him TBH

#2 is true until proven otherwise. He is the program. There’s several examples of schools who were terrible before and after a certain guy. Tony is that for our baseball program.

Hearing this from a credible source. It’s over 700k that DW gave to the women’s basketball and took from baseball. They butted heads. DW didn’t budge. It wasn’t for TV salary but his program. TIFWIW. Also was said on the radio no post practice meeting w the team and he’s Ona plane to see the ALCS
Tony Vitello is upset about financial issues and thinks he will suffer less in that regard in the MLB?

Is he stupid?

Reportedly SF isn't even willing to pay his $3m buyout and they're worth like 4 billion dollars and don't have other sports they have to divide money to.

If he gets upset over 700k, can't wait to see how much he'd cry about the billionaire ownership of the Giants pinching pennies.

I've yet to read a single report about inside information on this ordeal that makes any sense when you spend more than 2 seconds thinking about it.

Okay and why can’t we win titles in baseball going forward? Is Tony V the only coach capable of doing that? The program is built. New stadium coming. And I love Tony V but news flash if you don’t think Anderson and Elander are just as responsible for that natty and what’s been built, you’re not paying attention. This is a Ryan Day Ohio State situation. You promote and keep it rolling.
UTK, I mean this with all due respect...
You’ll be one of the first ones calling for Elanders head.
😉

The person that follows the legend rarely comes close to meeting the success of their predecessor. It’s not a Tony V thing, or a Tennessee baseball thing. It’s a sports thing.

I mean, if there was any program that should have had no problem staying at the top after their legendary coach retired, it should have been Lady Vols basketball. We’ve witnessed the phenomenon first hand. It’s not easy to just keep something rolling like that.

Not impossible, but not easy.

I posted this earlier in this thread but is directly responsive to #2: It is extremely difficult to make good hires in big-time college sports. More importantly, it's almost impossible to find and hire a generational coach like Tony V! He is the best coach on campus and has been such an ambassador for TN and college baseball.

Chris B. said he was irreplaceable and as I agree 100%. Tony V. has been the face of college baseball for several years now.....

I like it when our entire athletic department is successful but maybe it’s just me...
You completely missed my point. I will say it a different way. Via his relationships, CTV hears a confidential data point at Arkansas and compares it to a data point at UT. We know it’s apples to oranges, but I’m not sure he looks at it that way. It ticks him off and likely fuels unrealistic expectations. Most of us know that TN should and will support LV Basketball.

All this brings up an interesting hypothetical question, and recency bias may play a roll in the answer...but, if one has to go, you are you keeping, Tony Vitello or Danny White?

I can see a scenario developing where this becomes an issue of the campus is only big enough for one of them. If boosters strong-arm Danny White into keeping Vitello at all costs against his recommendation of what he thinks is in the best interest of the athletic department as a whole, how long does Dr. Danny stick around believing he doesn't have the absolute authority he may have thought he had?
He’ll realize he was wrong when Tony gets us another natty.

If Tony REALLY wanted to be a Vol, he wouldn’t leave over 700k, imo.

In the era of rev share, no one is going to be happy. We made Tony the highest paid coach in America a year ago.

We all know how competitive CTV is, maybe he just wants to go compete with the best? I can’t blame him if he wants to go do that
The school/state approved $105 million in facility upgrades for baseball (including the recent project overrun of $9.3 million) and pays TV $3 million/year. Obviously, the school has invested significantly in baseball, and it would be a shame to see him walk away over a relatively minor amount of money if the rumor is true of the $700k.

If he leaves to achieve his dream of managing in the big leagues, then I thank him for what he accomplished and wish him all the best.
