2025/2026 Coaching Carousel

Fickell is in a sweet spot. He's getting paid head coach money and the minute is no longer coaching at Wisconsin, he has a standing DC job offer from Freeman at Notre Dame.
Fickell being a bust at Wisconsin is a surprise for me. I didn't think he would win titles, but I figured they would be in contention most years, and a tough out. now they are struggling to make bowls.

a lot of the fails are obvious, but this one got me.

It's about NIL. He left Cincy right when things started to shift towards NIL being a huge factor in a program's success. I'm not sure he would leave if he had it to do over because Cincy hasn't really skipped a beat it seems.

The ways that people come up with to minimize the achievements of coaches/teams they don't like will always be hilarious to me.

My personal favorite is "Coach XYZ isn't actually a great coach - he just always has better players than every team he plays against." As though the coach had nothing to do with getting said players who are always better than their competition.
Yep. Fact is (supposed fact) maybe 25% of your roster goes to said school cause they always wanted to be at their dream school regardless of coach (think Gunner Stockton type). The rest go to play for a particular HC or a set of Assistant coaches they believe will develop them well. So the bulk of a roster is always about the coaches that got htem there.

I heard a recruiting guy say about 20 years ago "players don't commit to schools; they commit to coaches."

FSU is waiting until the end of the season before making a decision on Norvell.
Read that article a few minute ago from FSU. Can you say you're fired in 5 weeks without saying you're fired in 5 weeks. In their defense, Norvell has zero excuse dropping 4 straight, much less losing 4 on the season.

The only true joy in FSU & FL's plight, and I'm missing a few darlings here, is the sports media big heads claiming they were all back....again. Love the sound of crickets in the morning.

Some do. Most don't. Stockton is just one of those on record saying being is Dawg is all he ever wanted. He was going UGA regardless of coach. Bobo's dad started QB coaching him at 6. He was groomed to be a Dawg so to speak. He was never going anywhere else and he was never leaving even if Beck had stayed. Those like him are few on the roster, and most that are never rise above 3rd string. For lack of an educated guess, I'd offer maybe 75% of a roster commited to the coach & staff.

But, the school voted for west coast teams to be in conference. What do you think is going to happen when you travel 2600 plus miles for a conference game. Ask Penn State how that works out. No other scenario but in LA or Palo Alto would either of those teams have ever beat PSU & FSU. I'd strongly wager that trip affected the Northwestern loss too on the week after travel rebound.

In either case though neither team had any business losing 3 and 4 back to back. PSU though, IMO, was hasty. Sure FRanklin has a terrible record against top teams, but he's never dropped 3 in a row. This was an anomoly. Norvell on hte other hand has yet to put together 2 seasons back to back, and this implosion is after a 2 win season last year. 2019 & 2023 has been his only good run down there. He's either been ACC champ or rec ball coach. No in between really.

Georgia seems to do well with that type.

Believe Stetson Bennett was basically like that wasn't he? Moved to a CC for a year or two just to get some playing time and then right back to UGA

Tomorrow morning "may" be interesting

Florida struggling with Miss St
Clemson down to SMU
LSU already lost

I think I would "accidentally" be letting my phone die tonight if I was a coach on the hot seat lol
You were right. Sunday was interesting. But, it was FL & FSU instead. Billy already gone. FSU giving the proverbial we're behind him the rest of hte season speech, but Norvell is effectively pre-fired in Admin speech.

IIRC, he also had to get some grades to get admitted to UGA and maybe fix some head things he always dealt with. That took him till losing his rookie NFL season to take that seriously though. To my surprise he has been doing pretty well filling in out in LA though I think. Haven't checked his stats, but he's had a few good highlight reels this season. Seems to be growing into not thinking he has to take off and run all the time.

To be honest, I think he should have never taken that job. Wisconsin has been a casualty in the expansion era of conferences. Not saying he should have stayed at Cincy, but he should have definitely not gone to Wiscy.

I think he was at Georgia as a PWO then left for a season or two. I really don't know if the issue was grades or he just wanted playing time. I mean it's Georgia-hoe difficult could underwater basket weaving classes be?

I’m starting to wonder if Wisconsin is one of those programs that can’t change its stripes . They’ve tried to spread things out and go fast and it’s not working. They may just be a 3 yards and a cloud of dust team forever.

Part of Wisconsins "problem" is that this is the first real pain they have felt in decades

They were never a top team, but a consistent 9-3 type team. Always. Every year

Unlike us. Or Nebraska. Or now Florida

They never really bottomed out until now.

Changing your offensive philosophy from the I formation to a spread is something you do when the other thing stops working

They started changing everything over-and losing for a while as to be expected-and their fans went nuts.

Now due to fan revolt they have some weird hybrid spread/I formation offense and it's going about as well as you can expect.

If they commit to one or the other they will be fine

This doesn't just apply to Florida but to any open job in the country that might be looking to hire a coach whose team makes the playoffs.

This is Ole Miss mod Neal McCready. The other Ole Miss mods are fan boys. This is their "legit" journalist. He's talking about media suggesting Lane Kiffin could be the next Florida coach.

"Let's just look at the calendar. This is where I think some of this is really premature. And, I mean, I'm not saying it's not legitimate reporting or whatnot, I just think it's premature. Based on this: Ole Miss is 6-1 today. They go to Oklahoma on Saturday. Hypothetically, let's say they win the game. They're a four-and-a-half point underdog. So they're favored to lose, but they're not a prohibitive underdog. It wouldn't be a shocking upset if the eighth-ranked team in the country beat the 13th-ranked team in the country. So let's say, for the sake of this conversation that Ole Miss beats Oklahoma. Their next four games are against – all in the state of Mississippi – are against South Carolina, which is struggling, The Citadel, which is, I think, 1-6 as we talk, Florida, which just fired its coach, as you know, and then Mississippi State in Starkville, and Jeff Lebby has done a really good job there, but they've yet to win a conference game. Haven't won a conference game in a year-and-a-half now," McCready said. "So I'm not saying Ole Miss wins all four of those games. They'll be double-digit favorites in all four of those games in all likelihood, especially if they're coming off the win over Oklahoma. So let's say they run the table. That's 11-1, they're in the playoffs. They're probably, if they don't make it to Atlanta (for the SEC Championship Game) in that scenario because of some tiebreaker, they're going to be hosting a playoff game in Oxford on December 19 or 20th. If they win that game, and they've won, I think, 17 of their last 18 home games, if they win that game, they're playing on New Year's Day. Is Florida waiting until New Year's Day? Is another team waiting until New Year's Day, in this calendar? With signing day in early December, with the portal opening on January the second?"

It could have been a developmental transfer for playing time like you said. That actually sounds familiar. Could have also been behavioral. With the QB room at the time, he was going to have alot of "idle" time, and that wasn't his strong point.

It's clear you haven't checked his stats because he has none. Only played in the preseason.

I'm not sure why he'd take that job. It looks like Virginia has a better NIL situation than Tech does. And South Carolina's isn't great relative to the top of the SEC, but it's better than Tech for sure.
The ACC sucks, Tech is an easier path to somewhat relevance than the USCjr job in the SEC.

Lawd help me where Peay is ranked on that list...........
Not even on it lol, but that's not the point.

I just think it's stupid for fans to say how easy a school is when it's ranked objectively higher* than UT on any (and every) list LOL.

except FSU and UNC, for well, reasons I'm sure y'all can figure out
