2025/2026 Coaching Carousel

I think what people miss who say "Well after Pavia is gone..." or "It's just because he has Kill. When KIll leaves..." are totally missing the fact (perhaps on purpose) that Vanderbilt GAVE Lea the money to go out and get those coaches he got, and bring in some good transfers, not limited to Pavia. It represents a new investment into athletics and if you've been by Vandy's campus recently, you see that investment materializing. Their facilities are miles better than 10 years ago and they are continuing to build on and improve what is there. It's CRAZY to me. I grew up in Nashville and Vanderbilt has NEVER cared about Sports. I think they had one major donor who donated to Sports and it wasn't a ton. But Nashville is a great place to have your SEC School in the NIL era. Lots of opportunities for NIL and Investment into Athletics. I don't know where all the money is coming from. I haven't followed that closely. I just see the material results.
Nailed it.

Agreeed. He also brought in Pavia, so shouldn't he get credit for that? We are 5-1 this year mostly because of Joey, so does Heup get credit for that?

Vandy's rushing attack in general has been amazing this year. They are 4th in the SEC and their top 3 RBs are averaging over 6 yards per carry.
The ways that people come up with to minimize the achievements of coaches/teams they don't like will always be hilarious to me.

My personal favorite is "Coach XYZ isn't actually a great coach - he just always has better players than every team he plays against." As though the coach had nothing to do with getting said players who are always better than their competition.

Maybe, but then again, I think the pull of coaching your alma mater and low expectations is pretty priceless this day in age. I think if you're a good coach and have a little bit of financial backing you can win anywhere, and Vandy has money in the coffers. I would also consider UF more elite than PSU...any day. Maybe not over 50 years, but certainly since the 90's.

I agree. An alumni coach usually has a much longer leash than your normal new hire.

The problem with that scenario comes when you win at a better than expected clip though. Those low expectations become old news and you have to keep bettering yourself.

Look at what happened with Gundy or our own Johnny Majors.

Well said buddy. The toughest job in college is recruiting better players than the opponents you face. The only reason Kirby Smart won two titles is because of all the NFL players that were on his rosters.

Yes, but rarely does any coach get to ride off into the sunset. Gundy and Majors had good careers. Gundy had been coach for over 20 years and Majors is still beloved here at TN.

In the current land scape, Penn St is a much more desirable job, imo. More money, in the spotlight more often recently. Certainly it's a more prestigious institution, if that matters.

True, but generally speaking-the ones who get to ride off into the sunset are generally NOT alumni.

Offhand-at least the ones I can think of-

Saban
Bob Stoops
Beamer
Bowden
Osbourne ? (nor 100% sure on him as I don't think he went to Nebraska, but I could be wrong)

Edit-Osbourne got his Masters and PhD while he was coaching at Nebraska so I guess he is an alumni. His undergraduate degree and playing experience were however not at Nebraska.

We’ll have to agree to disagree…UF is has solid academics and athletics. PSU’s most newsworthy moment of this century was Jerry Sandusky cornholing young boys…

Clark Lea is 21-34 at Vandy (6-28 in the SEC) and has a worse record there than Derek Mason did

He's lost to ETSU and Georgia State.

He's an awful coach with mediocre players

He will be lucky to go 7-5 this season
Is this a serious post?

CLARK LEA? lol
Vandy 31 - LSU 24. 6-1, very likely to win at least 3 more. Still LOL?

After today I think you will see the screws turning on getting Kelly out of Baton Rouge.

Tomorrow morning "may" be interesting

Florida struggling with Miss St
Clemson down to SMU
LSU already lost

I think I would "accidentally" be letting my phone die tonight if I was a coach on the hot seat lol

Why is Clemson being mentioned in this thread. Dabo isn’t leaving Clemson unless he CHOOSES he wants to leave.

While I agree with you on some levels-

Part of me thinks that the Tigers have gotten a bit big for their britches and think they are entitled to a CFP berth yearly. I could see them doing something stupid-I mean it's Clemson. Not exactly a bastion of high education.

Dabo did that routinely and made them a national name to be up there with the Bama and Georgia and Ohio State’s of the world.

I wouldn't go that far. Dabo led them for a decent decade long run, but that is about all.

That run basically ended 5 years ago, but people are just realizing it now

Clemson about to go down again, and UAB! about to hand Memphis a loss. Arkansas making a game out of it with A&M. Man I love college football.

This was solely because the Tech starting QB was out for the game.

I was not aware of that.

I really should follow the Red Raiders more closely than I do. I have relatives in the AD there.

After what they did to Mike Leach about 15 years ago, I really can't muster much respect for them.

Interesting move here by Wisconsin. Instead of letting Fickell go now they're going to wait until early next season after he drops a game they don't think they should lose.

FSU is waiting until the end of the season before making a decision on Norvell.

Fickell is in a sweet spot. He's getting paid head coach money and the minute is no longer coaching at Wisconsin, he has a standing DC job offer from Freeman at Notre Dame.
