Did you see the catches Vandy WRs & TEs were making Saturday? THAT is talent. For the people saying players, I’d suggest looking at someone like Vandy right now. No way do they have our talent level but look what they’re doing. That’s coaching, leadership, confidence, attitude. It’s contagious from the top down. Leadership means something.
Sure we need some more great recruits, but that alone isn’t the answer. Look at the past years when FSU and A&M were absolutely loaded but blew it. Coaching matters.
With Kirby it was Ole Miss last year. He also struggles a bit with UK for some bizarre reason. They win but it is usually ugly.I hear you.
I just think there are a lot of people crying that have short memories and are lacking perspective.
Clearly CJH is still learning on the job. So is Kirby Smart. He seems to have trouble with a certain team as well.
There’s a lot I’d like him to do better but the only way that happens is learning on the job.
Maybe he’s smart enough to have pick up a lesson or 2 Saturday night.
Either way CJH is the best thing we’ve had in a looooooog while. An I’m looking forward to seeing everyone else go through the coaching searches and be disappointed.
Especially Florida.
Now there's a coach that earns criticsim. Flagship school in the entire massive state of the best HS football talent in the country, and has effectively accomplished little by comparison. We've seen coaching flaws in the best of the best when talent is even. Heupel and co with Georgia, Bama, Texas and OSU rosters would still win a ton of games. It would remind me of Sark.
Spot on. Spurrier's UF defeated many equally or more talented teams because he was an in-game mastermind. So often when we faced a Spurrier team, I felt like we had as good if not better talent than what he fielded, but Spurrier just was a master at understanding the weaknesses of other teams and exploiting them. We (all) hated Spurrier but to this day, he was one of the greatest field time coaches I have ever witnessed. Agree. Coaching matters, and that is why every remaining SEC game will be utterly trench warfare. Go Vols
and……
The #4,6or 8 recruiting class coming in
(Depending on who you ask)
If you don’t think there’s been some seriously high level coaching going on after the dumpster fire offseason then I don’t know what you are looking atThe problem with recruiting rankings is how they are given. Most 5* players are offensive skill position players. Heupel has done a great job getting those guys, but he’s lacking at defensive players. He did get Sanders on the offensive line and that’s a great start, but he needs DTs, LBers, corners and safeties. You can sign every 5* QB, WR, and RB available, have a great recruiting ranking, but you won’t have talent on defense. Recruiting is much more than a final ranking. Numbers can be misleading.
Finally, you have got to coach who you have. Our 2nd team DBs should not be this bad. Highly rated safety hasn’t played up to his ranking, the stacked recruitment of edge rushers haven’t played up to their ranking.
Once again, I don’t want to fire CJH

Post-Fulmer, the problem has primarily been the coaches and program infrastructure, not the players. Talent has been there (top-15 recruiting average), but development, schemes, and execution have faltered across multiple staffs. Players execute what they're taught.Georgia, Bama and Gators have not feared UT in decades, and their records against us give reason for this. Coach Heupel came into a mess and made us relevant again, which was much needed and appreciated.
So, here is the underlying Q in our/Vol Nation's attempt to become an Elite Team and whereby our SEC foes will actually fear playing the Volunteers.
If you had ONE choice (and yes, there are a million variables to this question) to secure either better coaching or players (and you cannot select both), which would you personally prefer?
PS This is not an indictment on the current team/coaches however, we now have two losses w a brutal schedule remaining. So, that being said, if you had a magic wand and could be granted one of the 2 choices, which would you select?
