Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Confirmed)

The best coach on campus is the freaking baseball coach who was not hired by DW. The second best coach on campus, Rick Barnes, was not hired by DW. The third best coach on campus, Karen Weekly was not hired by DW either.
So you’re negatively judging him based on not being here when Karen Weekly was hired almost 30 years ago? It’s not his fault those are great coaches that he inherited. He’s kept them here so far.

lol The 3 coaches you mention were 1-off hires by forgettable ADs.
CTV would be long gone without DW's commitment to baseball. I suspect you know that.

several....and retained the successful ones
He’s hired 3 and Heupel is in year 5 still not learning from his mistakes, refuses to make coaching changes

Caldwell in year 2

I don’t think the Track coach is killing it

He basically promoted Joe Kirt who is in year 3 and is basically faltering towards the end of the year & has the personality of paint drying

If you think Danny White's only criteria for his job is hiring coaches, then you are not intelligent to have a discussion on Danny White's job performance as AD.

Well, he hired the football coach that has us top 10 in win percentage the last 4.5 years after we were a losing program the previous 12 years, so that's a hell of a start!
I do think Kim Caldwell will be a home run hire. Heupel was a solid hire but needs to hold his assistants accountable. DW comes from a family of ADs and coaches. He knows his stuff and is a solid administrator, but simply can‘t rule with an iron fist. You’ve got to understand how special CTV is and make some concessions. Regardless, you swallow your pride and ego and ensure you gave a functional working relationship with the best coach on your campus.

Nobody gives a **** about Joe Kirt or the track coach.... and while I am frustrated with aspects of Heupel, firing him would be the stupidest AF thing we could do.... parts of this fanbase are so addicted to the misery they experienced from 2008-2020 that they can't help themselves

My point is that it is not about the AD, whoever that might be, it's about the coaches and the players. Heck John Currie couldn't get out of his own way but hired a generational coach in Tony Vitello. Oh and then there was the hiring of Fulmer as AD ---- wasn't that grand. Many on this board thought that was a great hire. I'm not saying that DW has not been a good AD but if doesn't understand that Tony V. is a generational coach then he is not very bright. Bottom line is that Tony V is not DW's "guy" and AD's across the country like to have "their coaches" in place......

Just because Tony Basilio decided to come out with reports this weekend trying to paint their relationship in a negative light doesn't mean they have a bad one. If Tony truly didn't like DW, he wouldn't be here. He is looking at an MLB manager job. If Heupel got offered the Miami Dolphins job and was thinking about taking it, should we just assume that means him and DW have a bad relationship?

Tony Vitello makes over $3M/year which was the highest until the guy who won two national titles in 3 years surpassed him by 100K... what makes you think other than Basilio's reporting DW doesn't appreciate Vitello?

Why would DW care what the fall roster is as long as it's 37 by 12/1?
I'd imagine that it's because DW doesn't want to field questions from half a dozen parents about why their son was offered a scholarship to play baseball at Tennessee and now that isn't an option. Six kids are about to have the rug pulled out from under them. That isn't really anyone at Tennessee's fault because the NCAA changed the rules. As I understand it, Tony wanted (and expected) more DSA positions. It wouldn't have helped all those kids, but a few more would have been taken care of.

I never said that DW does not "appreciate" Tony V - others have reported on the friction - not just Tony Basilio.....

I 100% believe CTV and DW have a strained relationship. I’ve heard this from people who would know—not just from Basilio’s blog. I also 100% believe that CTV and Sexton would be entertaining a Giants offer even if they were best friends. With that said, having a poor relationship with your boss is the #1 reason folks voluntarily leave jobs. It certainly doesn’t help that CTV and DW aren’t on the same page…

No one at the NCAA would have balked at 6 DSAs. That should absolutely have been the number UT requested.

Ultimately it is irrelevant. DW and TV could have a perfect relationship but TV would still consider this job. It's one of the half dozen or so premier MLB franchises.

I'm amazed that CTV hasn't already taken the Giants job. I suppose it has to do with who's responsible for the buyout.

If not a MLB job this year, it'll likely happen the next year. Or the next..

While I agree that if DW and TV had an excellent relationship, TV would consider this MLB job, I do not agree that their relationship doesn't matter........

Danny White is an excellent ad who is also a douche that is incredibly tone deaf at times. If it comes out that he ran TV off over a few fall roster spots he can gtfo as far as I'm concerned.

I’ve been going to Neyland Stadium since 1982. Like most of you, I love UT sports. I never EVER thought I’d say this, but I’d gladly give up my football & basketball season tickets long before I’d give up my baseball season tickets. (I know that I’m an outlier, and most UT fans would think this is ridiculous.). However, this is 100% due to what CTV has created. He’s simply irreplacable (as Chris Burke said last night).

I guess it is possible that MLB is a desire, but he may have some preferred landing spots and will pass on this first offer and hold out for one of those. No clue what his gut is telling him.
