I think we have a defense that is good enough to win games.

Take last night. We gave up 28 points to Bama on defense, below our average and we didn’t even really get multiple sacks or multiple turnovers.

All the offense had to do was play to their average and we win by 2 possessions. Defense was not the story of why we lost last night.

Ryan Day imo isn’t a great head coach but OSU gets him the best coordinators they can year in and out. Idk why Tennessee can’t go hire the best DC available in the country. We finally don’t have a bunch of fired head coach that we’re paying.

This. Theres no reason for Banks and a promoted grad assistant to be the coordinators of a 100 million dollar football program.?

McCoy and Hood are not going first round.
If McCoy doesn’t play some this season, then he will not go 1st round imo. It’s not like JaMarr Chase who just decided to sit out and train for one year. McCoy for injured and he hasn’t shown anyone this season that hes recovered from it.

Hood has been very good. Not sure his measurables will get him drafted that high.

As is usual for us. Last year was an anomaly with most being healthy most of the season.

Worst take possible and they had issues last year on a supposed "great" defense. The worst position group is safeties and he coaches them

Now that he is playing against SEC opponents he is dropping out of the 1st round.

Did we get rid of Martinez yet? That would be my first thought for upgrading staff. Maybe S&C and Special Teams coaches too. We need a real kickers coach!

STATISTICS are NOT always straight forward in their meaning.
For example,
.... IF you have the toughest schedule in the nation ... and you have "bad" defensive numbers ... those numbers are worsened or mitigated by STRENGTH of SCHEDULE.
... IF you have a lot of injuries at critical positions ... that might explain to some extent "bad" defensive numbers ...
... IF you have a coach that is ONLY thinking about ONE SIDE of the ball (instead of playing 'complimentary' football) ... that might explain SOME of the "bad" defensive numbers.

I will leave you to your imagination and mental gymnastics and hope that you can come up with the rest of the list ... once the light has come on ...

BEFORE anyone claims that I cannot see that we have defensive woes and issues ... rest assured, I certainly do ... but I will resist the temptation to place blame ... but all that will change will we have nothing but 5 and 4 star players on the defensive side of the ball. :^)))))))))

What is Tennessee’s average points per game against P4 opponents?

And what are P4 opponents averaging per game against Tennessee?

I’ve heard a few on here say the DC job under Heupel isn’t coveted because of our scheme. I don’t know how much I buy that. But to be in year 5 with the level of play we’re seeing is awful

The points stat can also be misleading .... in a game we barely won, the defense CONTRIBUTED 14 pts.
Alabama's defense/TN's QB was responsible for a 10/14 points swing on one play.
Points can be misleading ... That's why we laugh at the transitive application of points in football.

I also wish out defense was better!
Looked all over my house...could not find Aladdin's lamp.

Agree except Bama, Arkansas, and UGA in particular aren't "average" P4 offenses

Just curious, what has Kiffin accomplished at any school this is really that much better than JH has done at Tn ? He loses big games on par with JH, loses to the same schools as the rest of us in the SEC. He's never played for a SEC championship much less been in the college play offs. I've never seen a guy be so vaulted with having done so little

Let's accept mediocrity because Banks is not going anywhere. TCHFCATUTK AKA Heupel won't fire him. He's rather die on his sword. Get ready for a letdown the rest of the season.

Vandy’s o line is playing well. They have both a rushing and passing attack. Pavia can make plays w/his arm and legs. Their D gave Bama fits @ Tuscaloosa and LSU, yesterday. They destroyed USCjr on the road. Yes Sellers was knocked out but they ran all over Jr.’s defense.

I’d put the money on Vandy if they played tomorrow. Vandy is playing with confidence and having a good time. Our body language has been the opposite last few weeks, esp defense (after 3rd down conversions).

God, I hope not. It is already frustrating that we lost to the Gumps and Puppies, but at least people sort of expect that nationally and respect those programs. Even a legitimately good Vandy team beating a school draws mockery from many across the country because they’ve historically been a joke.

Plus, I’d love it if TN wiped that cocky smirk off Pavia’s face!

Which is the 2nd most Bama has scored in SEC play. Are we only 2 points better defensively than Vandy?
