Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

If you get some time, not urgent, please give me some feedback.
Son graduating from TTU ChemE in Spring. Considering Navy for Nuclear Engineering program. Doesn't want career. Wants the training and Defense Department clearance that he would gain. Worth it? Better options? Navy good program?
If he isn’t married and/or tied down go the Navy route and get into their reactor program management offices. That will get him hands on with the current nuke design programs. Then once he’s had enough Navy, pivot to civilian life and go GS or government contractor and make bank.

Man we were really worried about you. Please post in here every now and then so we know yall are OK. So very happy to hear from you. Several times we have asked eachother about you bud. God bless you and yours and G0 VOLS

Also...that renovation youre talking about doesnt sound too bad. As long as you have a good contractor in your area you will be fine bud. If you have questions or problems feel free to ask me or Slice. Or you can email me. I think youve got my email. If not I can get it to you. Wish i was closer and could help you out myself bud. So happy to hear yall are doing well though

My neighbor says don't raise the floor in the room created from the original garage - that he's always seen moisture problems when people do that. I'm thinking that when extending the heat and air out there of putting a couple of small ducts under the floor at the far end and a couple of open vents at the near end (back toward the return) as a way of moving air through what becomes a crawl space. It's a sealed and insulated area so any heat or cooling ducted under there isn't really lost to the outside. It moves the air and keeps the environment in the space under the living area close to what you want in the living area - also minimizes heat loss through the floor. It looks like one of the design concepts these days is controlled crawl spaces to do something similar.

The ceiling in that room is the same as the rest of the house, so the biggest other obstacle may be raising the outside door, but that seems doable. The new garage has a lower ceiling, so the only idea I have is a cutout in the room with steps down to the current garage door. Just have to put railings around like you see in a lot of open upper floors with stairs descending to the lower floor. Looses some useable space, but it's a huge room - it was at least a very spacious two car garage.

Those are at least a couple ideas to discuss with the contractor. If you've got any thoughts on them, they are always welcome.

Definition of "make bank" plz?

Thank you. I check things out here every few days depending on how things are going. We now have our house (Chattanooga), my house, and her house both in middle TN-about 30 miles apart. We've moved to my house because it was impossible to manage everything from Chattanooga. It's quieter here, and at least to me things are more sane. Doesn't mean I'm getting things done as effectively as I want - and definitely not as quickly as the wife wants, but that's just how it is. I've been moving a few things over every trip back to Chattanooga for appointments - necessities mostly; the real moving will come later when her house is renovated the way we want and need, and that's one of the things not moving quickly because I haven't arranged for someone to do the work. I have a contractor name, so we'll see how that goes.

My house was built in 1918 - in case of doubt it is older than me. We're in a very small town in the middle of nursery country, so mostly pretty quiet with a few semis passing through or on the bypass moving nursery stock. The wife is getting around much better right now and getting more physical therapy. She does some limited cooking, but you have to keep an eye on her and the recipe or things can get unusual. The move went pretty well; I brought her and one cat over and stayed to get everything somewhat settled. I figured the cat would be the big issue - not at all - she was racing up and down the hall having a ball in no time. Went back about a weak later and moved the other two cats over expecting the worst, and they are perfectly content. You hear a lot of "hoofbeats" up and down the hall at all hours. This is temporary until the other house is set up.

Her house is between Tullahoma and Shelbyville. It's not a great house, but has plenty of room for improvement. It's not as isolated as I'd like - one of two houses on a cul-de-sac at with maybe 8 houses on the entire street - pretty much surrounded by farmland. The real attraction is the backyard. It fans out with a large creek at the end (actually some property across the creek, too); but the backyard is partially wooded and over 2 acres, and you can't see the neighbors looking out the back of the house. My brother in law walked down to the creek with me a few weeks ago and said he could spend hours there - and I agree. So one improvement will be a large windowed deck for us and the cats. I thought about just selling all three houses and building something that really fit our situation assuming the wife doesn't significantly improve mobility wise and cognitively, but then in a more lucid moment she pointed out we probably wouldn't be living there more than another ten years, so that didn't make sense - mostly do something with the original garage (converted into a huge room) to improve the house layout. That means raising the floor - moving the washer and dryer out there to make a pantry off the kitchen and extending the master bedroom bath out there so you can just wheel a transport chair into the shower. I showed my brother what I had in mind and mentioned what she said about ten years and he had to add "Yeah, you'll be pushing 90 by then." I thanked him for the reminder - he's only two years younger than me BTW.

Anyway, I do look in and read to keep up what's happening with you heathens - and see which one of you is least likely to go on living. Kinda betting on McDad and ND40 right now. My wife didn't get her hormones refilled, so until they started kicking in again late yesterday ... I'll keep checking in, we're doing OK, and I'm resisting the temptation to spend more time here because there's more to do than I seem to be getting done. This being Bama weekend, I'm taking a break. I'm not expecting a win, but then you just never know. With a defense that could actually tackle and knock down passes, the odds would be a lot more favorable. I'm not counting on the officials to be neutral either - Bama will probably play their most miraculous and penalty free game of the year.
Sending you some fellow Vol vibes from my hotel room in Chattanooga. Hunkered down to watch some good (I hope) football tonight, before heading on up to Knoxville tomorrow. Me and 2 brothers gonna drop in on Mom on her 97th birthday next Saturday. Oh, and as I was driving through Tusca-loser a few hours ago, l let fly (metaphorically) with the Double Eagle salute to Gump nation.

I’ve done the door-to-door from Houston to Knoxville or vice versa, a few times (in about 16 hours), but I am getting too old for that sh1t. Today is Day 2, having stayed last night in Vicksburg.

I had to stop in Houston to close some things out, but it was like 11 pm when I said I better stop.

7-8 hours is enough for me, not like when were younger. I did Tyler to Chattanooga straight thru when younger, probably longest no stop ride ever

This is like my 4th or 5th road trip to KnoxVegas in the last 12 months, precipitated by Mom going into long-term nursing. On the first of those trips, last October, I did the return trip non-stop, pulling into my place in Willis around 11:30 at night.
