Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Merged )

Though it’s been many years since I was in the game having previously worked for a few different MLB organizations, it’s very difficult for me to see how this works in a franchise like SF. There’s a lot that doesn’t translate from what he’s done here to the pro game, so from that perspective it’s just difficult to appreciate this on the front end. And that’s even before we talk about the fact he’s never seen how such an organization works from transaction and roster rules to minor league operations just to name a couple. However, Tony is a leader and a winner even if in his own unique way, so I certainly won’t doubt him or the possibility that he could be very successful.

I’m sorry but 3-4 years and failing in MLB will knock some of that luster off! At that point he’s 3-4 years away from recruiting and getting to know the younger guys that he will have to recruit. Managers in MLB aren’t going out and meeting their new players before they sign them or draft them. That is the scouts and GM. They also don’t have much say in their roster, so it’s pretty much you are told here is your team, you better coach them well. Now maybe he will be able to recruit some free agents to sign with them, maybe he won’t, because the last 3 big free agent classes all told them no thanks even when offering larger contracts. Maybe he changes that since he can recruit, but that’s about the only thing I see he might be able to use from college to pros.

It stings for me as much as anyone but he truly does love Tennessee and the players that he coached; I believe that. With all that said maybe it was his dream to be a MLB manager and maybe he’s a big Giants fan? We don’t really know. Bottom line he brought our program back to relevance and gave us a natty. I could never feel ill toward him. I’m disappointed but not angry if that makes sense.

He will be back in the league, and it wont be here, if he leaves.

IMO Danny White dropped the ball big time. Diverted NIL money from BaseVols to Lady Vol Basketball. Danny White is protecting his hire for LV Basketball to the detriment of BaseVols. He also mismanaged LNS renovation from a one year project to a 3-year project. We need Larry Pratt to donate another $5M ear marked for baseball.

That’s what it feels like. I just hate that Tony preached loyalty and the “You’re a Vol or you’re not” and now we’re here…

No offense, but keeping the recruiting class and even the roster intact is hard to imagine.

Understand. I’m sure there will be some attrition and some commits, but maybe as a whole it wouldn’t be just a complete exodus.

It’s a beautiful city architecturally and natural aesthetics, it’s still a shithole though. I went 12 years ago “before” it got bad and you still stepped over a bum every 10 steps and it smelled like ass. IMO .......Huge Tony V. fan. Best recruiter in the country.

That said, as an ex-pro baseball player, Tony is not an X and O coach even at the college level. He is nowhere near ready to coach at the MLB level!!!
I stand by that statement. If the Giants are in fact going this route, then they are fools. It makes no sense when there are so many proven MLB ready managers in waiting. I'll believe it when I see it.

Looking forward to seeing Tony V. in the dugout at UT on Feb. 13th.
