They also don’t have much of a roster. Chapman is their best player and he got 4.1 WAR this season. They have tried past 3 years to spend huge and no big free agent wanted to sign with them. Manager is a simple thing in MLB, there most important person for MLB is the GM and he isn’t going to be that! Brian Snitker is an idiot that literally could have been replaced by a thumb cutout on the bench and they still won a World Title with him as manager. San Fran isn’t that anymore, they are second fiddle and will continue to be to the Dodgers. Heck their payroll is less than both Padres AND D-Backs. Seattle makes no difference in their payroll to what those that he will face in the NL west each year. Tony also likes to be the face and be front and center, I love his ego, but it just doesn’t work in MLB! Also that roster overplayed their stats this year, Matt Chapman is their best player and their starting pitching sucks with Logan Webb as their Ace and a usually hurt Robbie Ray as 2nd oh and of course the 42 year old Verlander. They aren’t built for the playoffs.Their payroll is higher than Seattle’s, and they are on the cusp of the World Series.
He's taking the job. He wasn't going to two weeks ago. But things have changed and he's taking the job. Got the word about 2 hours ago. Rough dayI would wait until it’s an actual confirmation before reacting any kind of way. However Danny White did his job, he kept him here through many other college offers. If TV wants a shot at the pros, not much DW can do about it. TV is a legend here forever. The program will not see much of drop off, if any imo, the foundation is built to last. Let’s just see what happens.
Even those of us who are baseball guys didn’t care before tony because there was nothing to care about. Sure we went to games for basically free, hoped they won, but they never did so we didn’t bother getting invested.I'll watch this season but TBH I didn't care about baseball until TV. I will watch and hope we are still good, but it's hard to see how there isn't a drop off.
Can't blame any coach that takes the jump to the pros at this point if given the chance. At least you know what you got and not worry bout someone shutting it down mid season to go some place else or having to recruit the guys you already got year in and out.I wonder, just wondering out loud if he's doing what Saban did, getting out because of the NIL and having to bid for players via the portal ? I remember the year they won the NC he was firm saying if you were a player looking for bucks , you need to look elsewhere ( not word for word, but along those lines) And the next year ( last year) there was a drop off in talent (IMHO) especially pitching. Anyways, I hope it's not true, was looking forward to many years with him as HC
I’m sorry but 3-4 years and failing in MLB will knock some of that luster off! At that point he’s 3-4 years away from recruiting and getting to know the younger guys that he will have to recruit. Managers in MLB aren’t going out and meeting their new players before they sign them or draft them. That is the scouts and GM. They also don’t have much say in their roster, so it’s pretty much you are told here is your team, you better coach them well. Now maybe he will be able to recruit some free agents to sign with them, maybe he won’t, because the last 3 big free agent classes all told them no thanks even when offering larger contracts. Maybe he changes that since he can recruit, but that’s about the only thing I see he might be able to use from college to pros.Good for him if he wants to chase his dreams at the Majors, if it doesn't pan out he'll come back to college and get paid well, he's proven himself at the college level
Chatter out there is that TV-DWrelationship is seriously frayed and that is why he is looking to leave.I would wait until it’s an actual confirmation before reacting any kind of way. A moment agoI feel bad for his players. We don’t know what he told them today, but if it was a leak, made him look foolish in front of them, imo.
All I know is that Vitello embraced the challenge of bringing UT baseball from the depths of misery and won a freaking natty. Miraculous IMO. If he can do that here, he can turn any MLB team around.
Disagree. They'll say he followed his dreams and remember what he did in college and some school will want to see if he can do it again.I’m sorry but 3-4 years and failing in MLB will knock some of that luster off!
