Watching the video was therapeutic.

We all know it’s Bama hate week.

It’s also Gator hate week.

Let’s look back at the Lady Vols vs Florida soccer history.
IMG_9781.jpeg

1996-2001

The series started in 1996, UT’s inaugural season.

Gators won the first 6 times they faced each other.

First victory over UF. And it was historic.

Knoxville, Oct. 19, 2001

PATRICK'S GOLDEN GOAL SNAPS #8 FLORIDA'S 50-MATCH SEC WINNING STREAK, 2-1

The #21 Lady Vol soccer team posted perhaps the biggest triumph in the program's six-year existence on Friday night, as junior Kim Patrick connected on a Golden Goal at 96:16 to help Tennessee halt #8 Florida's Southeastern Conference record 50-match winning streak, 2-1. The Gators had not fallen to a league opponent since suffering a 2-0 defeat against Vanderbilt on Sept. 14, 1997. In addition, UT had never upended a Top 10 foe or come out on top of its Eastern Division rival in six previous encounters.

USWNT legend Abby Wambach was a senior on that squad and scored Florida’s lone goal in that game.

IMG_9778.jpeg

2008-2017

Lady Vols went 1-6-1

Their only win during this period

November 5, 2014

2018-2024

Lady Vols have gone 8-0 over the Gators.

The longest streak in the series by either team.

Last years match.

The scenario, Tennessee needs a win to advance to the SEC Tournament. A draw or loss would end the season.

SEC

LOCK — Tennessee, Arkansas
BUBBLE — South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Mississippi State, LSU, Oklahoma, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, Auburn, Kentucky

The SEC has a lot of the issues that the aforementioned Big Ten has, but the ceiling for the top couple of teams is probably a bit higher. Tennessee had been sitting pretty with their non-conference wins, but as North Carolina and UCLA have slipped, so has the Vols’ hopes of a #1 seed. Truthfully, there’s not a ton of upside left on UT’s schedule in the regular season as far as boosting their top line credentials goes. It’ll largely be a case of just taking care of business and hoping some of their non-conference opponents can do the same. At the very least, the Vols look like strong contenders for a #2 seed.

Arkansas is the other main contender for a top two seed in the league, but they have more warts on the resume than UT. Head-to-head losses to Iowa and Duke aren’t going to help their cause for comparison’s sake if those teams are also in the high seed mix. Arkansas’ own form may be the biggest obstacle, as the Razorbacks have won just one of three, with the loss to bubble side Georgia last week particularly damaging for top two seed hopes.

A big chunk of teams likely looking to firm up a decent seed follows, though most have little hope of coming close to the top two lines. South Carolina could pay a price for a tepid win profile in non-conference play, with only the win against Ohio State standing out. The Gamecocks drew at Clemson and lost to Georgetown, which could hold them back. A sweep of their last three SEC games could offer a glimmer of hope for a #2 seed, but it’s not likely.

Vanderbilt might be the best hope for a late run if they catch fire in the SEC Tournament, as they have big non-conference wins over Louisville and Georgetown. But there’s also a loss to Texas which is hanging around their neck like an anchor. There are big challenges and opportunities down the stretch, with Sunday’s game against Tennessee a potential resume maker if they can keep the three points in Nashville.

Alabama is in a similar spot with many opportunities for moving up late, as they get the league’s top two as a part of their run-in. The Tide really need a win in one of those matches though for seeding hopes, as their best win on the season is at RPI #28 LSU, marking their only win against an RPI Top 50 team so far this season.

Mississippi State was seemingly in a strong position to garner a high seed after raking up wins against Wake Forest and Tennessee in the first half of the season. But the Bulldogs’ form has betrayed them since, with a draw against .500 team Auburn and back-to-back road defeats, the latest against bubble side Florida, seeing them sink in the RPI. All three remaining games in the SEC could realistically go either way, but MSU at the very least should be safe from bubble danger given their big wins.

At this point, the remaining teams are hardly immune from bubble worries. LSU is largely just hanging onto its win against Wisconsin for dear life, as their profile beyond that result is largely unspectacular other than a few nice road draws in SEC play. The Tigers have little upside left on their schedule, which should help with SEC Tournament seeding but not with their bubble status. Oklahoma is grinding their way to a potential at-large bid, with a win at Alabama and draw with Tennessee slowly but surely getting Oklahoma closer to the finish line. The Sooners really need to beat Auburn and Texas though, as their RPI rank is still suffering from a putrid non-conference slate.

Georgia bought themselves some breathing space on the bubble with a win over Arkansas that when coupled with the earlier win over North Carolina should give the Bulldogs enough leverage to get an at-large bid. The biggest risk at this point is their RPI rank, which could take a hit if they slip up against either Texas or Auburn this weekend. If the Bulldogs can avoid dropping points there, they should be able to avoid a nervous bubble wait if a calamity strikes at the SEC Tournament.

Florida kept its fleeting bubble hopes alive with a win over Mississippi State, though that’s really all the Gators have going for themselves right now other than a draw with South Carolina. UF also has the very real issue of being just one game over the .500 cutline right now, which means they need to win two of their final three to be safe from that barrier. Ole Miss on Sunday is almost a must win, but the Gators likely need to pick off either Tennessee or LSU in addition to avoid a potential win-or-else scenario at the SEC Tournament. If the Gators finish at .500, they have a shot at a bid though.

It’s minor miracle time for the last three teams on the bubble. Texas A&M is somehow still alive despite being two games under .500 and having won just four games all season. The matches remaining against Missouri and Kentucky are must wins, and the Aggies likely need the sweep by beating South Carolina on the road on Sunday as well. Even then, I’d argue A&M’s case is shaky due to their lack of big results. Auburn is at .500 and without any RPI Top 50 wins. Given the lack of those wins, the Tigers probably need something close to a sweep as well. Given the remaining three are Oklahoma, Georgia, and Missouri, it’s possible, but also unlikely to be enough to push the Tigers into real bubble consideration.

Lastly, Kentucky doesn’t have any worries about the .500 cutline at 9–4–2 right now but have a non-conference RPI that is essentially disqualifying right off the bat. The Wildcats do have wins against Oklahoma and Alabama to work with if they scrape onto the bubble. However, they’re winless in three and moving in a bad direction, which also puts them into the “likely needing three wins from three” category heading into the SEC stretch run.

MATCH CENTRAL: #3/4 TENNESSEE VS. FLORIDA

IMG_9807.jpeg
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --The No. 3/4 Tennessee soccer team is set to host Florida Thursday night at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and will be streamed on SEC Network+ with Tori Beeler-Watson and Andy Brock on the call.

Admission is free for all preseason and regular-season soccer matches. For fans planning to attend, note that Tennessee's clear bag policy will be in effect again this season. Regal Soccer Stadium will be a cashless venue for both concessions and the VolShop this season as well. Additionally, fans can park at the Ag campus and ride the free fan shuttle. Pickup is on the corner of Joe Johnson Dr. and Service Dr. For the Florida match on October 16, fans are encouraged to park in lot CC1 located in front of the Brehm Animal Science Building. Due to a concert in Food City Center that evening fans are encouraged to arrive early!

Last time out, the Big Orange extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Oklahoma. The result also marked the Lady Vols' NCAA-leading 11th clean sheet of the 2025 season which has them one shy of the program's single-season record.

MATCHUP HISTORY: Thursday will mark the 38th meeting between Tennessee and Florida – the most games the Lady Vols have played against any program.Tennessee holds a 16-18-3 all-time record against the Gators and enters Thursday's match riding an eight-game win streak in the series, during which they've outscored Florida 17-4. In games played in Knoxville, the Lady Vols are 8-5-1 all-time. Their largest margin of victory came in 2021 with a 5-2 win over Florida in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals. Under current head coach Joe Kirt, Tennessee is 3-0 against the Gators. Florida head coach Samantha Bohon is no stranger to Tennessee, having served as an assistant coach for the Lady Vols from 2001 to 2004, a period in which Tennessee won two SEC Championships and reached the NCAA Tournament all four years.

FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS: Through 14 matches, UT has 12 goal-scorers, including four Lady Vols who have scored two or more goals in a single match. Shae O'Rourke, Anaiyah Robinson and Kate Runyon have registered braces for the Big Orange as Alivia Stott fired five goals against EKU--the stretch marked the most goals ever scored in one half in program history and the shortest span in which a Tennessee player has tallied five goals. Each of her five goals was assisted by a different Lady Vol. In total, 16 Lady Vols have recorded at least one assist this season, the most in the SEC.

LOCKDOWN DEFENSE: Tennessee's defense has been dominant from the start of the season, setting the tone for the team's success. Center backs Ally Brown and Leah Klurman were both named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's midseason Top 100, ranked No. 14 and No. 26, respectively. Goalkeeper Cayden Norrisjoined them on the list at No. 34 and was named to the Hermann Trophy Midseason Watchlist, forming the core of a back line that has surrendered just five goals in 14 matches. The Lady Vols' goals-against average of 0.357 is tied for the lowest in the nation. Outside backs Kennedy Price, Sydney Miller, and Milee Zych have played key roles as well, helping Tennessee open the season with seven straight shutouts. In total, the defense has recorded 11 clean sheets — the most in the nation.

HOME SWEET HOME TO ME: Tennessee is currently unbeaten at Regal Soccer Stadium in 2025, posting a 6-0- record and outscoring opponents 17-1 in Knoxville. Under head coach Joe Kirt, Tennessee holds a 22-8-7 record on Rocky Top.

SCOUTING THE GATORS: Florida (6-5-3) enters Thursday's matchup riding a five-game unbeaten streak, including a 2-1 win over No. 12 Mississippi State last week in Gainesville.
The Gators have picked up points in each of their last five matches, with two wins and three draws. That stretch includes a scoreless tie against No. 15 South Carolina and a 2-2 draw at No. 17 Georgia, where Florida erased a two-goal deficit with a pair of second-half goals — the equalizer coming in the 88th minute. Freshman forward Addy Hess was named SEC Freshman of the Week after scoring the game-winner against Mississippi State. Hess, along with fellow freshmen Kai Tsakiris, lead the Gators in scoring this season.
