Tennessee Lady Vol News

Glad to see Coop get the recognition, but she may not even be the best player on our team. Spearman looks great and then there is Barker and I hear Latham has hit another gear. So I hope Coop is awesome, but we have a lot more that could be awesome as well.

I think Coop's Quick Hands are first-team quality, but the occasional mental lapses kinda held her back a bit at times last season. Hopefully her brain caught up to her hands in the offseason. If so: 🤩

She’ll be on the catching end of some of those passes that last year generated turnovers.

Are these available to non season ticket holders yet? If so, where did you purchase them?
I’m not a season ticket holder but have been buying tournament tickets for about 30 years. I just get to renew my seats or upgrade now without worrying about losing my preferred seats. They are not available yet unless you have preferred status. We will be moving home in a few months from Atlanta, so I hope we can get decent season tickets for next year if I’m still alive and kicking. Almost forgot. Purchased them from the SEC ticket office.

She was almost totally a freshman last season cause sitting the bench at SC for a season didn't teach her a lot you have to play. I expect a much more mentally ready player this season. I am thinking she will be amazing in scoring and getting teammates involved.

Let's not put a lot of stock into pre-season rankings! Let the games and season get underway at least! But I do believe the 1st game will tell us a lot about this team.

I agree 100% that the first game will be an important test and show what this team can do. I am excited and ready to go. Look for great things from this year's team. GBO.

There are still some nice tickets available for the MTSU game in Murfreesboro for Thursday, November 20.

I figured I'd already waited too long, but finally remembered to call MTSU's ticket office today (and order my ticket conversing with a real, live human being!) hoping I might find something that's not too nosebleed, or behind the goals.

I was shocked at how many decent seats are still available this long after the schedule was announced! There are seats much closer to the floor still available on the other side of the court, but I chose a higher seat in Section E so I can watch the coaches on the bench.

(And I promise to wear orange, not blue.)

I guess I'm most interested in seeing how far up the learning curve our new players have progressed from Nov. 4 to Nov. 30.

I don't mind early losses as long as we see the team progressing as a whole on defense, and working well together on offense regardless of the combinations of players on the court together.

Regarding readiness to begin our SEC schedule... I hope to feel sorry for poor Louisville by noon Saturday, Dec. 20th.

I personally believe that if, and that's a big "if", there is a weakness on this team, it will be outside shooting. There are a lot of new faces who will not have played together before and that will generate a little performance pressure. Shooting is to a large extent mental. Anything that gets into the head can hurt focus and shooting reliability. Some will be able to shoot out of it while others may go into a funk. That's why I like Kim's emphasis on drive and shoot. We'll get a ton of points inside or within 8 feet and that should help them get comfortable shooting the ball in Kim's offense.

I've long been mystified why college basketball teams seem to have a bad shooting night all together. Odds would say that if your best one or two players have an off shooting night, another teammate should be shooting well that night. But it hardly ever happens that way! Bad shooting games seem to be team-wide for boys and girls.

But then again, on traditional teams, there are only 7-8 players who are playing significant minutes on a bad night. So I'm eager to see this season with this team--where hopefully the entire bench is playing--if that team-wide off-shooting phenomena holds true down to the 14th player.

(If we learn that cold shooting does hold true for the entire roster, look for a new thread entitled, "Voodoo Analytics - sponsored by Matsuta Knives and Tyson Chicken")

Good post. I've wondered about that also. I don't have the answer but have always felt there must be a psychological element. Success breeds success? Failure breeds failure? Group (team) think, they are or are not going in today? On the other hand, there is also the scenario where one player gets hot and "carries the team". I dunno. It's a mystery. I do know, when the whole team is hot it's hoo boy, what a team, final four bound. When nobody on the team can throw it into the lake it's the worst shooting team we've ever had and we won't make the tournament. It's those swings of fortune within a single game or from game to game throughout the season that makes sports fandom such a maddening yet exhilarating experience. In other words, it will drive one freaking nuts.🤪 Oops, another thought, the level.of competition could have something to do with it. That might be quantifiable, to a degree.

Just my own personal observations as a person who played both individual and team sports for decades, while also having always been hyper observant of team dynamics:

iWhether they even realize or not, players are constantly watching for physical and/or verbal signs from each other and the coaches to gauge whether everything is okay, or if maybe it's time to panic. And whether or not they understand exactly how they can, players definitely CAN sense if the staff and/ortheir teammates are just pretending everything's okay when it isn't.

Once the team's vibration gets in sync one way or another, things happen as they all unknowingly, vibrationally, set them to happen. Sometimes the wheels fall off, and sometimes they race to a fun win.

All this can change in an instant in either direction, though -- IF the team truly trusts at least one leader. But that's kinda rare, IMO. Everybody talks about team leaders, and I think most folks assume that every team has a leader. But that's not the case.

Now, it is possible for a player to take on that leader role occasionally and the teammates will buy in if that player is out on the court obviously giving everything they have. But there's no guarantees.

The main thing, though, is the head coach needs to figure out how to balance both the fire and the calm that a really tight or meaningful game usually requires of them on the sidelines and the locker room. If the players sense the coach doesn't believe they can win, they won't. But if their coach isn't panicking, they stand a way better chance of winning.

Aaaaaand scene. 🎬😂
