Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Officiating is a big part. There are some games where it determined the outcome, but not all.

The Bama game in 2023 probably would have been a win. Bama had a single penalty all game while draping all over our receivers (which was called on us), held with impunity, and some silliness about an arm gesture on a kickoff I’ve never seen called since that pinned us deep coming out of halftime. I’m sorry BOT, you have to be looking for an excuse to call a penalty to do that.

What about wins? It’s all above board in your opinion that the line moves significantly right before the Arkansas game and they are only penalized once when it mattered?

The blame refs after every loss crowd is wrong, and the refs are always above board crowd is wrong. There is a middle ground here that is correct.
Good approach IMO. I don't like the 'blame the refs' crowd for all bad things that happen to a team. And, I don't believe in most conspiracy theories. But with SEC officiating being so terrible, it does make me wonder. Only 1 penalty at Neyland (where the home team usually gets the calls)? No Offsides call? The Auburn/Georgia game? Makes me go hmmm.

All I am saying is every game we have posters who constantly complain about the refs. And then we have some already that are building up pre made excuses about not getting called fair in Tuscaloosa. We all know it won’t be called fairly. I wonder if those same posters think visiting teams to Neyland think the same way?

You think visiting teams get fair calls in Neyland? No way. So what do you do? You make sure the refs don’t dictate the outcome the best you can
Did you even watch the game this past Saturday? Go look at the box score for penalties and tell me Arkansas didn’t get a fair whistle in Neyland, or that we did for that matter. Add to it, you have a team coming in with a new coaching staff playing on the road. I’m sorry BOT, calling BS on this.

Can you imagine in your wildest dreams a penalty difference like that ever happens in Tuscaloosa, or Athens, or Gainesville?

Double post..now how did that happen?

With the average margin of victory getting smaller in college football, these officiating issues are coming to a breaking point where conferences won't be able to ignore it. Bad calls are increasingly becoming the difference in games and you can bet on coaches and ADs opting to risk fines by making public complaints instead of simply submitting them silently to the conference. If we get screwed over this weekend, I hope Heupel and Danny White decide to show some backbone and make it clear that they won't tolerate it.

I hope our defense shows an ounce of pride and backbone this weekend. Two weeks in a row now they’re being openly clowned and called terrible by the opponent they are about to face. The bulletin board material didn’t help much last week, so probably won’t this week either, but man hopefully they are sufficiently embarrassed and have had enough of this.
Saturday was weird. Washington blew up for like 90yds in the first qtr, then accounted for 40 rushing the rest of the game. And we honestly kept Green bottled up until those last two drives. We desperately need a complete game from the defense this week.

chances are good ALA's offence will put up some big numbers, will TN's offensive numbers be bigger..

Arkansas talked ish last week and it didn't really have an impact. They got 500 years yards.

I don't know why all the sudden this ish talk garners a different result?

Our defense is feast or famine. I'm sure we'll make some great plays. And I'm sure baba will too.

Nobody mentioned that a big dude like Tyre hustled his ass off and ran that guy down...I noticed and was proud of him.

What's crazy is in that one clip it showed me the biggest problem that still exist on defense.

One group who is coached by a legendary coach (RG) had a 300lb grown man hustling his backside off to make a play 20+ yards down the field....

One group who is coached by the DC and S coach had 2 of his guys do bare minimum to slow down the runner....

What's a peddle tavern? Is that a rickshaw that sells beer? 😂
It’s basically a bar on wheels that’s partially propelled by those at the bar (whom are seated at it via bar stools on the outside), which is typically a bridal shower or similar group. I’m not sure how secure/safe the seats are. It looks very much like what you would expect.

That would be a bad decision for Tennessee. Coaches would use that as negative recruiting against Tennessee. He didn’t choose to get injured, sh*t happens, if that is the choice he makes you ride it out till the season is over with. Tennessee has some to gain with Mccoy being a high draft pick and star NFL player. When recruiting out of the portal you can show Mccoys development and high draft status as a reason to consider Tennessee. If Mccoy has a successful pro career that can be used to Tennessee's advantage as well. Last report I saw, and I'm probably behind on this, Tennessee's medical staff wasn't clearing him yet so who knows. I get the frustration, and I want Mccoy back as bad as anyone, but this whole situation sucks all the way around and I think you gotta just ride it out at this point.

To me you pay him while he is rehabbing and doing events.

The minute he decides he is not going to come back even though he has been cleared then you have a decision to make. If that is September, I probably cut his NIL off. If it is late October or November, then I can understand him not wanting to take chance if he is headed to NFL.

I think in everything it depends and is not black or white decision.

I get it and someone else responded the same way... makes sense, I didn't really think about that way, with perception and NFL ... I will still say if he is sitting for the draft on purpose, then he needs to at least give up the NIL or have it dropped down to a fair amount... I won't change my mind on that...

Great post

I mean we do have areas where the team can get better...

Willie catches more blame than he should when you consider what he's done with the CBs...McCoy, Hood, Hadden, Turnage, Gibson (until getting hurt)...etc. he's made guys better year to year.

But the safety group...I mean seems we've always had some problems there.

Yep, Safety play has been terrible for about 15 yrs or close to it

They need to finally develop somebody or spend heavy in the portal. A big time safety would go a long way esp with how Banks likes to play defense.

Do not let them establish the run to set up play action. Gotta have at least 5 in the box, and cover the back end with 6. I’d run a lot of single linebacker, extra db sets. Hope Carter is healthy and rested, gonna be doing a lot of running. No more soft zone. Can’t let Simpson sit back and throw slants/curls/crosses all day. Gotta run press. Make every catch contested. Make every throw pressured. We should be able to get home with our dline. Don’t need to run stunts on dline just bring the occasional extra man and keep the blitzes interesting and hard to identify pre-snap. Our ability to get off the field on defense will be key. I hope our offense will get play calls in quick to beat the noise and not reveal the ate until we’re ready to run, keep their defense confused with great play calling like the uga game, and slow things down to help our d stay rested. Should be a great game and hopefully we can overcome the officiating and home crowd.

We have not gotten really a true fair shake on calls in big games so far this year in Neyland and it's obvious... you can even go look at the stats... No way Arky has that ELITE of a Oline that they had basically zero holding calls the entire game and played clean enough to only have 1 penalty??? How about the most obvious PI on arky where he grabbed our players arms so he couldn't catch the ball? The video shows the ref standing literally right there staring the play down and allowing it... I believe that was on third, which would have given us a 1st and continue the drive...

you must be younger, not living through all the years of the painful watching of bama basically assault us for four quarters, every game, and nothing ever happened... I believe in recent years, the worst was one year with JG at home and another year it was with Hurts or Tua... it was insane to watch the blatant bama privilege the entire game.

Vandy has a far better defense than us this year...that is inarguable whether it's weird or not...our defense just sucks this year. It is what it is at this point, they have not had one single good game, even against the scrubs.

Thus the concern that Simpson is about to throw for 400 and 5+ against our sack-o-taters defense.

I personally think, or I hope, that our defense will play a little better than that, but I totally understand why some do not.
I think they did have good games against the scrubs, we gave up yards and points after subbing everyone out.

However, I knew during the Cuse game when they were moving up and down the field that it wasn't the same as last year. We lost 4 NFL d-linemen and it shows and we are dumber in the back end without Will Brooks and McCoy.

I do think our defense is closer to average than terrible, especially since they can cause so many havoc plays, they should get credit for that. The offense and special teams haven't exactly provided the best complimentary football either.

Ms St - Stayley muffed punt after a 3 and put followed by another miffed punt and kept turning it over to them in our territory.

Ark- couldn't score after the Ross strip sack. Not stepping on their throat up 17. If we just went down there, punched them in the mouth and went back up 17, 41-24 then the story ends up being, "defense holds them to 1 TD after going down 17-10"

Deboar will lite us up a bit, that's a given. They'll March down the field on us a few times. We just have to not shoot ourselves in the foot, then we know that our defense is good for a few big plays and they can get to Simpson. That'll give Joey and the offense a chance to win it for us.

I'm afraid we will continue to make a bunch of dumb mistakes that will coat us a trip to the playoffs.

I think if anything the past 3-4 years has taught us with Heup and NIL and our position groups overperforming and underperforming, is we must have at least 2 elite level WR's, strong O and D lines, and good Lawd we need to spend money in the secondary...

I believe we got lucky with Gibson, McCoy, and Hood, and it's saved our asses... they are leaving and we have some potential young talent, but we MUST spend money to reload the secondary... Safety is a priority along with replacing DB's.

this would effectively obliterate our recruiting

unfortunately, with the injuries and graduation on defense from last season, it's looking more and more like it will be the reason we don't make the playoff... Crazy to think if Hobbs, Moi, Gibson, and McCoy were all healthy and playing every game this season, there's 100% no doubt we'd be undefeated and maybe even excited about going to gumpville this week to whip their ass... but we just don't have the depth and are missing talent at key positions on D and that's the difference.

Meh, they just had 3 straight close wins against comparable teams or teams we are better than. No one is perfect this year. It's a coin flip.
