Being pushed to the absolute limit by 2 of the 3 worst teams in the SEC, one being at home off a bye, is not a good sign.
I had AI build a quick summary of the Top 25 vs the spread (Against the Spread - ATS) from this weekend. 21 of the top 25 teams had games this weekend with Miami, Virginia, Vandy, and Memphis IDLE. I did not check all of the scores to verify accuracy so hopefully the tool did it correctly.

10 teams failed to cover the spread, and 5 of those (Oregon, OU, BYU, Iowa St, and FSU) lost the game when favored to win. The largest spread differential:

* Ole Miss was favored by 31.5 and won by 3
* OU was favored by 1.5 and lost by 17

People seem to forget our defensive philosophy is matched with our offense. From an overall defensive perspective, yes, we're not very good. From a turnover perspective, however, we are. The entire defensive philosophy is pretty much to get a few turnovers/stops so that our offense can go do it's thing. With Heupel as coach, that's always going to be the case.

There are negatives and positives to be taken from the game yesterday. Negatives? The defense is feast or famine. They continue to get gashed and give up big plays. I think we all figured that would be the case against Arkansas though. Heupel not keeping his foot on the gas is the other.
The Vols still managed to win despite playing below their ceiling. We all complain about the defense but the turnovers and sacks they create cannot be ignored. The offense made plays when it mattered most. Win and survive.
Positive for me was managing a win. To be 5-1 at this point in the season was as good as I could have hoped. Assuming disaster doesn't strike, we get 2 gimmes against UK and New Mexico State. That give us 7 wins which is where I pegged this roster. If we stay healthy and Banks figures out how to fix our issues on defense, we have a shot at pulling an upset from among the remaining games. 8 wins for this team would be a very good season under the circumstances.

I wonder if the % chance of losing increases if you keep throwing the ball instead of trying to run up the middle. Everyone would be talking about how stupid we are if we were throwing picks in the last 8 minutes of a game.
Never know till you try. Hype sits on the ball and poorly manages end of games. We were lucky 2 weeks ago and almost effed up yesterday. Score dang TD’s! GBO!!

Also close to being 5-0.
Defense is troublesome, but doing well enough so far. Too often they are being asked to “win the game.”

I am concerned with CJH continuing to take his foot off the gas in crucial moments of the game. They are 5-1, but are very close to being 3-3 (0-3 in conference) because of this tendency. Being creative in critical moments is the next step for him, not running the same three running plays and punting.

All this negativity after a close win is confusing and not needed. Yeah there were some holes and we got gashed at times and isn’t ideal. But our offense seemed to do what they wanted at will and was never scared they couldn’t go down there and do their thing. Play calling at the end got a little dicey and we were kinda playing scared but that same defense yall are trashing came up with some good plays and a turnover. When we get McCoy and Gibson back it will be a game changer. I would like to see if hood can potentially play some safety because I feel like he could be a freakin ball hawk back there and has proven to be a solid tackler. D line is solid just misses assignments here and there but I’ll ride with them. Linebacker is decent, Arion Carter is a man amongst boys and telander is slow but the dude plays his heart out and makes tons of plays as well. We have a solid receiving core that we all thought was a huge question mark but have all proven us wrong with a 3 headed monster at tailback and transfer qb that is playing lights out. Times are good on rocky top so quit your moaning and let’s go kick some bama ASS!! GBO
Wasn’t the offense like 2 for 9 on third downs at one point? Not sure our offense did what they wanted at will.

I was told on here that Arkansas RB Washington gave Tennessee “bulletin board material” and all Tennessee’s defense did was let him run it down their throats. Defense is soft, I mean like really soft

I don’t think it would end well for you if you told them that to their face

I would and if anything happened to me they would be proving my point that they are soft
I guess it would depend on what you are referring to when you say soft. I took the implication as not physical enough. If he fired off on your head, I think that would be the proof he isn't soft. If you are implying he is unable to control his emotion, I would be curious why you said it in the first place.

Arkansas has an excellent offense and one of the best the Vols will face. Disappointing that UT offense wasted several turnovers but Vols should gain confidence from close SEC victories and find a way to win. Refs missed easy calls that killed their offensive momentum.

He was hurting us in the 1st half but we hurt him in the 2nd. He was neutralized pretty good I’d say, but yes our secondary was way too soft after we got the lead.

Negativity seems to be the thing now. Wonder if their getting paid?

Arkansas may be considered worst team sec team because of record, but they no doubt are more talented than their record. Mark it down they will pull a few big wins before the year is out. Except for Notre Dame when they laid down they had been in every game. And if they don’t fumble they would have probably beaten Mississippi. Their offense is very dangerous.

The three and outs after turnovers, including turnover on downs are deplorable, Saban teams punished opponents with possessions after turnovers, Heupel and crew simply futz around when they should break the home game wide open and get some second and third string players in the game.
Most all good coaches go for a big play afterr a turnover, but we don't

I agree with you to a point, but last year there were times our defense carried us. This year so far we’ve played lighter in the box to help our secondary. Just saying if we were just a tad deeper at a few spots on D it would look a lot different. The good news is our secondary is getting better and more experienced, and hopefully we start bringing more pressure up front. We’re laying back too much a lot of time. Time to bring some new blitz packages. GBO

The worst how many of the worst defenses have you ever seen Lead the nation in sacks and top 5 in TFLs and Turnovers and second in defensive TDs? It’s no where near the worst but far from the best as well we are middle of the pack… the offense really has to help them out more and take advantage of the TOs that they are getting so they can blow the game open and pin the DL ears back and get after the Qb..
That’s the redeeming quality of the defense. They force turnovers. If we force a few turnovers against Bama they have to result in points.
