Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

So I had an interesting opportunity today. One of our business partners was able to procure two full up functional systems of our primary competitor via a surplus auction. And they loaned them to us until the end of the year to do as we please they just want them back in the same condition they gave them to us in.

So I asked to look under the hood to see how they implemented my part of their design. Our two companies have made it a point to assess the competency of the competition over the last three decades of me doing this. And I had an image in my mind of how they solved the design problem I solve in our systems.

Lo and behold I saw exactly what I expected to see. Down to the subassembly level. One always hopes they are competent and able to properly gauge their competition but it’s always reassuring to get actual data to support that premise.

The fact is for an electro optical sensor you can glean a huge amount of information by just reading the one pager marketing pitch if you apply some physics based principles to what you see. And those all panned out! Woohoo!

And finally, what was my impression of their design? I was actually quite impressed I thought it was very well executed abd packaged. I’ve always taught my protégés to not assume your competition is a bunch of clueless morons because they will eventually beat you out on an opportunity capture and does that mean you got beat by a bunch of morons? Practice some Sun Tzu

Longhorns OL still sucks...

Headline: Lovable nerd has nerd-gasm over validation he is supreme nerd.

LOL

Nice work, man. Take your win and go to your wife for an immediate reset of your value to humanity.

I can now fully retire in about 9 weeks knowing that if I was a complete moron at least I had my competition accurately pegged 😂
i have raised a couple of nerds. One thing I know for sure is the nerd must tinker. What will your tinker be when you retire fully...the boat, audio systems, building robots to sink ham sammich's boat?

I’ve toyed around with the idea of reaching out to the local community college and seeing if I could have a volunteer role in their electronics lab. Then I remember how much young kids piss me off and I quickly move on. And get off my lawn.

All I know for certain is what I WON’T be doing anymore. At all. Completely uninterested. When the topic is broached here on extending I immediately but politely interrupt and state I am not interested. If there is some specific need we can talk if they want. Just know I really am ready to call it a career.

Will I find some tech subject that piques my interest? Dunno maybe. Right now I just plan on going refined hillbilly. Golf, bass fishing, and shotgun sports. And try to get about 30 lbs off again. I’ll do that for bit and go from there.

I’ve been at the beach since Friday night, been fishing, played a round of golf, hung out on the beach and by the pool. It’s been enough for me to conclude I’m no where near ready to retire and damn sure never living in a condo. 10 more days and I get to go back to work!
That's good. Somebody gotta pay the mortgage on the new house. BTW, how's the build progressing?

You’re just not ready yet grasshopper 😂

Sounds like a good plan. Please, no router usage. OK?

Start your own business. Work on boat electronics and stuff that interests your nerd side.

DO NOT start your own business. Don't listen to hog, @NorthDallas40. He's delirious with free time right now.

Invent something that solves a problem. License the product. Become a billionaire and leave most of it to me. TIA.

I bequeath my pittance to you.

Only the home network kind.

And I left guitar off the list. I’ve owned a Martin D-16 for over 20 years that I really want to learn how to play decently. And borrowed a buddies HSS American Strat and amp that he had tucked away in a closet.
