So I had an interesting opportunity today. One of our business partners was able to procure two full up functional systems of our primary competitor via a surplus auction. And they loaned them to us until the end of the year to do as we please they just want them back in the same condition they gave them to us in.
So I asked to look under the hood to see how they implemented my part of their design. Our two companies have made it a point to assess the competency of the competition over the last three decades of me doing this. And I had an image in my mind of how they solved the design problem I solve in our systems.
Lo and behold I saw exactly what I expected to see. Down to the subassembly level. One always hopes they are competent and able to properly gauge their competition but it’s always reassuring to get actual data to support that premise.
The fact is for an electro optical sensor you can glean a huge amount of information by just reading the one pager marketing pitch if you apply some physics based principles to what you see. And those all panned out! Woohoo!
And finally, what was my impression of their design? I was actually quite impressed I thought it was very well executed abd packaged. I’ve always taught my protégés to not assume your competition is a bunch of clueless morons because they will eventually beat you out on an opportunity capture and does that mean you got beat by a bunch of morons? Practice some Sun Tzu
Longhorns OL still sucks...
