I’ll always remember the 1992 game as well. Kicked a field goal at the end to beat the Vols. My wife was out of the country so I took my elderly mother to the game to her first and only game. Daughter’s first game too. A close friends son missed two tackles on a punt return and IIRC Arkansas scored on the return. I never have mentioned it to them. Still can’t believe he missed TWICE on the same play😳😳. Hogs will probably play their best game of the season Saturday!

That was a killer. Losing to the two expansion teams that year kept us from going to the first SECCG in Birmingham. Beat either one and we win the East because we had already beaten Florida and Georgia. Arkansas was terrible that year and SC wasn’t much better.

As I recall, Arkansas hit a 50+ yard FG at the end to beat us. In Neyland.
Final minutes were crazy. Give up a 70+ punt return, failed 2 pt attempt, then they recover the onside kick. FG was 41 yarder.

I think there was some sort of voodoo unleashed by the hogs back in 71 after we beat them in the liberty bowl. They got a late fg that would have sealed the game called back on a controversial penalty. Granted, we still had to drive down and score a TD, but it seems that there's some weord mojo surrounding the hogs when they play us.

Petrino will probably invite Rohan Davey's entire family to the game on Saturday.

I get tired of people saying that it was a miracle or luck that TN beat Arkansas in 98. BR told CPF that the defense would get the ball back as they were taking the field. Sure enough he pushed the guard back causing him to step on the QB’s foot causing the fumble. That’s not a miracle it’s determination. TN then proceeded to run the ball down AK’s throat. That’s not a miracle or luck but determination. Even AK’s coach admitted this fact. TN absolutely earned that win and it wasn’t a miracle or luck. It was simply a team wanting it more.

Yep. And we’d have played them in a rematch in Atlanta with a more seasoned Shuler. Probably still lose, but funny things happen in rematches. Hell, Florida was a pick 6 away from beating them and we destroyed Florida that year.
True! Honestly, on second thought, who knows how the regular season matchup with Bama would have gone, had Shuler not gotten banged up. If I recall correctly, he got his bell rung, and his shoulder jarred in that game. But Arkansas and South Carolina were beyond inexcusable that year. Nearly caused an existential crisis in this (at the time) 13 year old 😅

Thank you. I've had to make this same argument on this board myself. And by the way that player's name is Billy Ratliff. Just an iconic play and moment in our history.

i will always love and respect Coach Fulmer but let’s be real he really should’ve won 4 or 5 SEC titles and another national title with all the talent he had.
Personally, I put a lot of that blame on Coach Sanders. Waaay too conservative and unimaginative. First down, up the middle, keep the defense honest. Spiraled downwards from there

Arky has been a thorn in our side…..

Going back to 1998: Tennessee is 5-6 vs Arkansas. — With Four consecutive losses.

I was at the 1998 game, and it was an absolute sports miracle that we won that game. Stroener’s legendary “Stumble & Fumble” with 1:47 left on the clock….

Tennessee would NOT have been in the BCS National Championship game had they lost that game to Arkansas.

Tennessee could also have been Repeat National Champions in 1999 - if it wasn’t for Arkansas! 😡

— Not to mention a Six-Overtime game in Neyland that the VOLS snook away with in 2002….

Arkansas doesn’t always look that tough on paper, but they always show up ready to play - And they sure don’t FEAR Tennessee.

Call it a “trap” game - or whatever,
But the VOLS should not take these guys lightly!…..
98 is still one of the most miserable fan experiences I had the pleasure of being in person for. Glad we pulled that one out for obvious reasons but man was that game a wash for 3.5 quarters.

I was there 98 and stayed until the very end !!
It was a cold, rainy night. I was sitting near the Arkansas fan section when “the fumble” occurred. I’ve never felt so sorry for a group of opposing fans. They were celebrating being undefeated one minute and the next, stunned silence. John Ward’s radio call was, “What else, Bill Anderson, can happen to Arkansas??!!”. They also lost the following week and were out of the national championship discussion after starting 8-0. But they got us back in ’99 and knocked us out as well. Unbelievable memories!

Not to mention that had the refs correctly interpreted the rule when the Arkansas punter kicked it through the end zone, we’d have gotten the ball at the 1 instead of a safety, meaning we’d have had to go 1 yard for the winning score instead of 40. That was bad luck.

It was also bad luck losing the best RB on the planet in game 4 of the season.
