I had to look that up and could only find year 2000 and later. The team recruiting rankings vs the on field record was just pitiful..In Fulmer's prime, nobody recruited better than him! He was the "Kirby Smart" in his day in terms of recruiting. I appreciate Huepel and Im pleased with the program he has built here, but no. He is not recruiting at a prime Fulmer level yet.
We won sec titles in 97 and 98. That’s 2 titles, yes we should have at least had 1 more in the 90’s maybe 2. 99 team had more talent than 98. Could have been a 3 peat right there. How do you recruit top 5 classes most years and play for one conference title? Fulmer got so little out of all that talent, the amount of failure would have been malpractice in most high paying professions.

The four years between 95 and 98 were magical. Everything after 98 was disappointing (though not all terrible by 2010’s standards). I looked pretty hard for some older rankings and eventually Google led me back to this site.We won sec titles in 97 and 98. These are recruiting rankings from 1992-2001. This was in column by Jacob Luft on CNNSI.com in 2002 and it shows Allen Wallace and Tom Lemming's rankings (pre-rivals). I completely hijacked from some random blog so don't shoot the messenger.
The best way to build championship programs is to have multiple top 10 recruiting classes-something Tennessee hasn't done in a long time. We need recruiting continuity and Butch might just be able to do that.

Really from 95-2001, the talent level here was just ridiculous! Maybe the most talent we've ever had here in a 7 year stretch. Sadly, it was down hill from there. We still had "good" talent from 2002-2008, but not on the same level as from 95-2001. We also had a lot of churn in those years because Fulmer recruited a lot of questionable character guys.I agree, the 99 team lacked that type of leadership. 96 and 97 teams were very talented too. All 4 of them teams were capable. GBO

Well it is considerable harder to win in the sec now. There's no question that he is a better offensive mastermind than Fulmer was. No debating it. But as an overall head coach, when Huepel wins more than 152 games here, at least 1 natty and some conference championships, I'll say he's a better coach than Fulmer.
You coach in the era you coach in. I'm not holding that against Fulmer. Who's to say that a young and hungry Fulmer wouldn't have done well in this era? No one can possibly know, just like we dont know how successful Huepel would have been here in the 90's and 00's.Well it is considerable harder to win in the sec now.
He’s not, but our recruiting has gotten better and better as he’s been here. Who’s to say it won’t keep improving? We are competitive year in year out. Our brand has been repaired faster than any of us could’ve imagined.Recruiting is part of being a great head coach. Fulmer in his prime was as good as anybody. Huepel is not at Fulmer's level, at least not yet. We need to see some top 5 classes first.
Thats why I said he's not at Fulmer's level YET! I'm not saying he can't get there. He might! But he's not there right now. He’s not, but our recruiting has gotten better and better as he’s been here. Yes 2000-2001 were talented teams. I thought we were just talking nineties. Really from 1989- 2001 we were pretty steady in talented squads. Maybe a few young squads in there but we were overall very good. GBOReally from 95-2001, the talent level here was just ridiculous! Maybe the most talent we've ever had here in a 7 year stretch. I know, but I wish he had picked McCallie instead. Supposedly, Peyton has owned a lake house in the Chattanooga area for many years. His own kid plays for Baylor JV this year after transferring from his Colorado middle school, and they own a house in Chattanooga now accordingly. Marshall will be a freshman on the varsity squad next season at Balyor.
