In Fulmer's prime, nobody recruited better than him! He was the "Kirby Smart" in his day in terms of recruiting. I appreciate Huepel and Im pleased with the program he has built here, but no. He is not recruiting at a prime Fulmer level yet.

But he is not that far off from it. And I do think Josh is a better coach than fulmer …. Matter time it all comes together

that was the knock on Fulmer ...that he would get the top recruits and still not beat Nebraska or Penn St, or win a NC
But we were always in the discussion for winning the NC and beat rivals Bama/Georgia ( not so much Florida ) on a regular basis

There's no question that he is a better offensive mastermind than Fulmer was. No debating it. But as an overall head coach, when Huepel wins more than 152 games here, at least 1 natty and some conference championships, I'll say he's a better coach than Fulmer.

Had a young Fulmer started coaching at Tennessee in 2007- he still would not have even an SEC Title much less a National Championship right now imo.

The conference is MUCH harder now than it was back then. He coached against a weak Bama, and Mark Richt and Jim Donnan led Georgia.
And sorry LSU until Sabin came there.

Anytime a fellow respected SEC program hired a good coach, Tennessee would struggle…

Heupel is a WAY better recruiter and coach than Fulmer could have ever dreamed.

We'll never know but I'm not going to hold that against Fulmer. He coached in the era he coached in. He had no control over that. That's like people who say Larry Holmes wasn't a great fighter because of the era he boxed in.

We also have 3 bigtime Oline recruits coming in next year in the 2026 class. OT Blair, OT Shabazz, and 1 more I cant remember. We have one of the best Olines in the SEC and country this year. Have some talented underclassmen as well. Looks like we are gonna be set at Oline for the next several years. Need to grab a couple Dtackles and a Safety or 2 from the portal. We are set everywhere else IMO for 2026 and beyond

We could very possibly have 5 first rounders in McCoy, Hood, Braswell, Heard and Josephs.

I think Hobbs is more likely to return than not.

Recruiting is part of being a great head coach. Fulmer in his prime was as good as anybody. Huepel is not at Fulmer's level, at least not yet. We need to see some top 5 classes first.

Why so many coaches have no time for other important things. Just the nature of the animal in recruiting though! My daughter’s best friend brother is defensive coordinator at a major D1 program right now, ranked and currently undefeated. I complimented her brother on a great defense. Her reply to me…”if he doesn’t find some serious time to spend with his wife and children soon…he may be living life by himself” 😳. It takes an incredibly understanding and committed wife to endure all the time spent away.
