Competent black pilots have been flying for the airlines for 50 years. Just because they wanted more blacks doesn't mean they didn't meet qualifications because they were black.My father was a bomber pilot in the USAF and helped spur the hiring of qualified black pilots who otherwise had been passed over for simply being black.

That begs the question then, what is DEI a response to? We’ve overcome tremendous hurdles in this country, thanks to people like your dad, so what barrier was DEI implemented to overcome? I’ve never heard of any discrimination cases against the airlines and based on your response it seems like they want diversity for diversity’s sake.

Totally repsect your position and what you say your dad fought for.

However, if a company says they want a certain percentage of employees to be a certain way, but don't express that they must be qualified, vehemently so if a pilot, or that standards won't be lowered to acheive those goals, then i'd have to be leery of their qualifications. And it doesn't just have to apply to black employees or pilots. Otherwise I say go for it.

With all due respect pilots already have to meet certain criteria to qualify.

Now if you were to argue that you wanted the best, regardless of race, the argument has a leg to stand on.

My understanding or inference is they found the weapon loaded with multiple rounds. I believe they did state the spent cartridge was still chambered.

Maybe it was implemented because in many cases, there was a more qualified black pilot that didn't get hired over a less qualified white pilot. That was the angle my Dad used in his efforts. The comparison of resumes was his catalyst

I’d point to his career senior military career and his posts for starters. He has the background to step into the role. He is absolutely a war dog I agree with you. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t know how to run the department of defense. Wait my bad. The department of war.

Did he reform acquisitions? Cut budgets? Trim the flag officer fat? Make combat units more capable and agile?

He pretty much did what every SecDef did before him and maintain the status quo. Yeah, he was a good field leader and a warrior at one point, but I have serious issues with him trying to stay in Syria (as the DoD did even after Mattis resigned/was fired) and not wanting to pull out of Afghanistan.

We had no business being in either, BTW. Not long term at least. And I'm not even going to get into his views of climate change and pushing the DoD to continue funding the items in that agenda.

I thought that was the point. Not just saying your goal is to have a certian percentage a certain way. That lends credence to questioning if they change the criteria to meet that goal. If your gonna hold steadfast to the criteria and still aim to level the distribution, then I see no issue. As long as all that meet the criteria still have a flying chance. And I'm leery of "more qualified" statements. You're either qualified or not qualified.

Would be interesting to know. Racism in hiring practices exists, no question, and can be nearly impossible to detect without overt evidence. I think DEI can be a good thing if it encourages opportunity where there is a perceived barrier.

My biggest complaint with his role as SECDEF was he hung on too long once he decided he couldn’t support Trump anymore. To a point you made earlier POTUS is his boss. If he can’t support his boss he should have resigned before publicly speaking out against him.

He was an accomplished field leader. He was very well read also. He was a big believer is practicing Sun Tzu on knowing your enemy.

Correction: I went back and read up on the timeline of Mattis’s comments vs his time as SECDEF. He did stay quiet for a significant time before he spoke out big he did eventually speak out. I think Kelly handled the situation better.

Man, I absolutely agree. I don't like a lot of stuff I hear, from regular people to politicians (both sides). However, despite how strong I feel about things, I'd never want someone I disagree with killed, just over their beliefs.
