I'm not sure. that article was from 2023.
Ive heard Chris Winfrey talk. He's a giant sports nut, college sports nut. Adam Ray attended college in Maryville.
Charter aint losin' ESPN.
7 years ago. I was told the goal was to go Direct And “kill off” the cable companies. You are seeing that now with the espn bundle and soon to be fox with them.
Charter may chose to keep ESPN but for that they pay so much for ESPN that they have to have more of their customers demanding ESPN then those not willing to pay them $40 bucks for it plus another $80 for all their other NON SPORTS that those people actually want. Believe it or not there is a huge percentage of Charter customers that don’t want ESPN. Sports and ESPN are not alacart options like HBO because the terms and conditions to get ESPN won’t let Charter sell them separately. This way Disney can extract 30/40 bucks for the Disney properties from everyone on charter not just the folks that watch espn.
This is all part of their plan. It is why you are seeing more and more games go to “pay“ channels and not free over the air broadcast.
You can believe me or not but I spent many many years flying all over America and Europe selling to Disney broadcast and streaming divisions. I was selling to them when they bought Bamtech from MLB to turn into their streaming platform to fix the crappy ESPN app and when they bought the fox studios and when they bought the second third of HULU(they just bought the final third). ESPN app never got fixed 100% because of the original team that wrote the ESPN APP. New app supposedly coming Aug 21/22.
This has been Iger‘s dream all along to sell direct to consumer and take that extra margin from cable companies.
