The bigger issue and need for the rule is like what happened to us at Bama in 2023 on our first possession of the second half. A dude nowhere near the ball puts his hand out and we get the ball at our own 4 because of it. Codifying it now instead of leaving it up to interpretation like it was then should be good for everyone. The well coached teams shouldn’t have any issue with this rule.Personally, I don’t think so. Apparently it was an unwritten form of a fair catch before. Shane Beamer tried to play in the gray area in last year’s Citrus Bowl. Led to some words from Illinois’ Bret Bielema.
