Appalling allegations made against Chinese doctor working at Houston hospital

A Chinese cancer doctor has been accused of trying to steal sensitive research from an American medical lab and take it back to his home country.

Yunhai Li, 35, was stopped by customs officials at Houston Airport on July 9 as he tried to board a flight back to China.

On his laptop, investigators found research on a breast cancer vaccine he was developing.

The 35-year-old has now been charged with theft of trade secrets, a felony, and tampering with a government record, the Harris County District Attorney's Office said.

Li entered the US on a scholar visa and had been working at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Research lab in Houston as a postdoctoral fellow since 2022.

The vaccine research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense, technically making Li a government employee.

Li signed a non-disclosure agreement when he joined the lab and said he didn't have foreign research affiliations or funding.

But, according to the affidavit, he was receiving funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and secretly doing research for Chongqing Medical University.

With the possibility of China invading Taiwan heating up, I have a question. Just what do they expect to gain? It seems to me that the downside is way bigger than the upside.

I think China a) wants Taiwan because they simply want Taiwan out of belief it has always been part of China and b) they likely know we will do absolutely nothing if they make a move on Taiwan other than condemn, sanction and protest at the UN.

I hope that's all we do

The Chinese Civil War is still technically ongoing. Hasn't been any fighting or real bloodshed in most of our lifetimes, but no peace treaty was signed.

The One China Policy has maintained status quo, but didn't end the war.

Taiwan, aka (ROC) the Republic of China, existing is seen as a challenge to the mainland China government (PRC) Peoples Republic of China. its been so long that most people forget that, and personally I wonder how much the people of Taiwan still identify as "Chinese".

so part of it is just control. also lots of high tech manufacturing, including chips, that goes on there. if China was able to take the island bloodlessly they would gain a huge technological step forward.

geographically Taiwan acts as a bit of a plug on China, in the South China Sea. Hard for China to project power into the area if they are constantly having to go around a pretty big island. also it would be an important staging ground for any attacks into or out of China if China was at war with the US.

The Taiwanese very much consider themselves Chinese.
You should visit there some time. It's an interesting place.

You are correct but left some out. Taiwan is where the Chinese Nationalist Party fled and it is their regime. It is basically a counter-regime in a still on-going Chinese Civil War. To win the war, they need to bloat them out. It isn't the island itself, but rather the regime that resides over the Island.

Not bad, Grasshopper, but the ROC is no longer the KMT's absolute domain. They compete with other parties there now.

Something like that. I was referring to the assertion that Taiwan is the KMT's regime.

KMT as a party maybe voted out but the general regime is still there under a different political party. No different with countries approaching the USA with the same position whether it be Biden or Trump in office.

A regime is the group or party in power, a la the Biden regime or the Trump regime, the Byrd machine in Virginia, Boss Tweed in NYC, the Daleys in Chicago, etc. My point is that the KMT is not always the group in power in ROC. ROC being separate and not under PRC control is what bothers Xi, as you mentioned,

NBA Kowtows to China with LeBron James Op-Ed in State Run Media

LeBron James has published an op-ed in Chinese state-run media, in an apparent effort by the NBA to get relations with the communist nation back to where they were in 2019, before then-Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey’s infamous tweet of support for pro-democracy supporters in Hong Kong.

James’ op-ed appeared on Monday in China’s state-run People’s Daily newspaper on the tail of his extensive tour of China’s basketball scene, in which he met players, helped critique practice sessions, met with community groups, and shook hands with civilians and officials across the country.

The Lakers star further pandered to China with his post-tour op-ed in which he called basketball a ā€œconnecting bridgeā€ between the two countries — a bridge that also runs through his personal bank account. The op-ed is notable in that China rarely publishes articles penned by foreigners, especially sports figures.

James is not the only top player set to tour China. The NBA has also announced that it will be holding its first-ever NBA House event in Macau, China, in October. The event will be attended by star players, including Tim Hardaway Sr, Stephon Marbury, Shawn Marion, Shaquille O’Neal, Mitch Richmond, and Deron Williams.

In his op-ed, James praised China for the ā€œincredible receptionā€ he received wherever he went during his Chinese tour.

Philadelphia To Raise CHINESE Flag Over City Hall To Celebrate Founding Of CCP

The city of Philadelphia will soon raise the Chinese Communist Party flag in front of city hall in a controversial display of celebration of the establishment of the regime.

The decision sparked swift backlash and letters to Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker to axe the move.

On September 30, the Office of Immigrant Affairs intends to hoist the flag in an event sponsored by the Pennsylvania United Chinese Coalition.

The organization is seeking to improve the CCP's reputation within America as part of a cultural exchange.

Interesting, I've only spoken with Taiwanese here, a lot of them actually. Engineers and specialists working in a few manufacturing facilities we supply. They seemed to absolutely hate the Chinese. In fact I was talking to one particular guy and he's said "Fu!? China", which I find very out of character for Taiwanese.

Edit: my point in posting that wasn't an attempt to counter yours. Just simply my surprise in that sentiment. Based on my limited experiences with Taiwanese I had a very different, apparently incorrect impression.

The CCP flag is a hammer and sickle. Do you mean the PRC flag, which is not a hammer and sickle?

Oh they don't like the PRC government or the PRC in general for what it stands for, maybe something like a lot of older Southerners not liking yankees, New York, etc. But they're Chinese to the core.
