Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I can agree with this. Good football mind. He had zero intuition on how to run and represent a college football program.

So much more goes into running a college football coaching than just coaching on a practice field and in games. He hated dealing with the media, boosters, and public appearances.
I also think how they turned it around in 2019 was pretty impressive.

If we even had Nico level QB play, we beat Ga St and BYU. Would've been 9-3. I think he was the better coach of the 3. Isn't saying much, but I'm almost glad he didn't have a good QB because he may have stuck around longer and we wouldn't have gotten Heup.

They will replace it with something.

But I think getting rid of Vol Calls was long overdue. I mean

-It's on the radio, which no one listens to.
-The same 20 fans every year.
-Cringey, terrible questions every week

Move the Mike Keith show to podcast format and split it into two shows: post-game and a mid-week fan mailbag version.

Just that would be an infinite improvement to Vol Calls.
Alienating loyal fans, whether you think they're "cringey" or not, is never a good idea.

The show lasted only about an hour and gave access to 100+ live fans and at least several thousand over the radio. Each one of those fans talked about the show/interaction with a few of their friends. That's at least 15-20k fans talking about the Vols every week as the result of a 1 hour show. That type of interaction helps drive the brand at the small market level and helps fuel interest in the program with the locals.

Times have changed. Doing a radio show or podcast with a mailbag is better.

I don't agree with the "driving the brand at small market level." It's not like its generating new fans. The people influenced by Vol Calls are ALREADY local brand loyalists with interest.

Maximize your time and effort to audience. Can you take the same time and effort and put it into a format that generates more engagement and interest? Yes? Do that.

In an article on ESPN that talks about potential risers and fallers compared to last year. Gives a little insight to Syracuse. Vols are not on the list.

Tumble: Syracuse Orange

2024 Record: 10-3
2025 FanDuel Win Total: 5.5

The Orange may have the most difficult conference schedule in the ACC. They visit Clemson, SMU, Georgia Tech and Miami. Those are arguably the four best teams in the league entering 2025, and it's not like Syracuse gets softballs at home. Duke, Pittsburgh, North Carolina and Boston College are all on deck, four teams that enter the season with bowl expectations or better.

Then there's the nonconference portion of the slate, which opens with Tennessee and finishes with a road trip to Notre Dame in late November.

Throw in the fact Syracuse brings back just seven starters and that the team's potential starting quarterback, Steve Angeli, wasn't even with the team in spring practice, and it feels like a tall ask for Syracuse to make a bowl, let alone sniff double-digit wins again this season.
I can easily see that is no slouch of a non-conference slate (!) and perhaps Syracuse does have the ACC's hardest schedule. I expect Syracuse to be pretty good in Atlanta. And I figure our team does too and will be focused.

What FD's writeup there amounts to, perhaps, is to say that many ACC have cushy schedules. Our “team's potential starting quarterback … wasn't even with the team in spring practice,” either.

They were good the last time we played and beat them, too.

Good luck with that 😂😂😂

I hope Wes does not waste time smarting off about the Vols. There are plenty of other snark targets everywhere that would be welcomed as a way for him to attempt some witticisms.

I hope he does a great job.
