The want to might be there, but he doesn't have the confidence in his QBs to let 'em just play. Hence the timid play calling. And yeah, that's on Heupel. He chose Milton and Nico. Bad evals. Backed into/inherited Hooker so he gets no credit for that.
The first mistake was thinking that he could harness and train Milton’s cannon of an arm. Milton probably looked great in practice but would revert immediately in games to trying to overpower the defense. Unfortunately he overpowered his receivers as well. I don’t think he was ever able to read a defense and change the play on his own.

Nico was a superstar in 7 on 7 when there was no chance of getting any contact. He could not make quick decisions and was frequently running for his life because of it. He also could not apparently read the defense either. He was at Tennessee strictly for the money and was unlikely to respond to coaching. Evidenced by him spending Summers in california with qb coaches rather than with his receivers. He frequently missed timing patterns because of it.

I don’t fault CJH for thinking that he could work with those two. It just sucks that one essentially was not coachable and the other essentially didn’t accept being coached by the Tennessee coaches.

I think that CJH had some very valuable lessons over the last 2 years. It’s going to be apparent in how well the offense performs this upcoming season.

I would stay in contact with Hendon Hooker and make him an offer to coach.

And most importantly
