I think we all would prefer more superior forms of dessert to cake but let’s stay a bit more on topic before they move the entire conversation to the pub forum

Carrot cake with cream cheese icing is top 5 in the world of cakes.

The list:
Yellow cake/ homemade caramel icing
Strawberry cake/ homemade strawberry icing
Carrot cake/ cream cheese icing
Lemon pound cake/ lemony, sugary glaze
Pineapple upside down cake

Honorable mention- German chocolate

Fight me!!!
There are so many varieties. Publix makes a yummy Raspberry cake. And you forgot to include any cheescakes on your list. That's just sinful. But I like all you list except, I haven't had Yellow Cake with Caramel icing. That sounds like something the Communists would make.

Cheesecake is not really cake. It's more of a pie or pudding. It belongs in the same category as flan

Fact is cake is not the best dessert, not even close, but if you must have cake, it goes like this for me (qualification cake must be in the name - ie therefore it is a cake):

1. Cheesecake
2. Carrot cake (buttercream or cream cheese icing - no cheap stuff)
3. Devils food cake
4. Hummingbird cake
5. German chocolate cake

Honorable mention: red velvet

I will say that my cake preferences are complex and not bland, so they are dependent on a well executed cake. The texture, density, moistness, flavor must all be good. If not, these cakes can easily be ranked below a typical cake your friend made. But for the purpose of this discussion, let’s assume we’re eating the real deal.

Cheesecake is the worst cake

No questions, please

Homemade caramel icing is fantastic. If you're around Bulls Gap, stop in at Yoder's and get one. They make the closest yellow cake/caremel icing I've had to my grandmother's. (She made me one for my birthday for at least 35 years. GOD rest her soul. 😢 )
