The Gardening Thread

@CagleMtnVol
@Orangeslice13

Tuesday, the 10th I will be coming back ya'lls way on a solo trip to meet up with my wife down in the ATL. I've never stopped to shake hands cause i'm usually not travelling that way solo. I'll be running the 111 down to Hwy 153 exit and cut over the damn to I-75. IIRC both of you are quite close to 111. One on top of Spencer/Cagle Mtn., and Slice I think is north of Hwy 153 maybe. I do have Slice's contact info and we have texted in the past. Won't have too much time, but enough to finally meet.

Thought if one or both of you were available, could pull over and do a quick meet & greet, shake hands and hug it out.

I figure mid-afternoon'ish to get that far down. I'm working half a day first. 3:00pm CST range.
If you’re spending any time in the ATL, I’m just north of there and would be happy to meet you for a handshake, a coffee, or a beverage. Let me know your agenda.

My two smallest sunflowers were nibbled or stepped on. The three others are fine. Likely, I won’t put any more seeds in the ground.

Nothing else in the vegetable garden is being bothered by bugs or critters. 🤞
My beans, peppers, and tomatoes all have an abundance of flowers and a few baby fruits.

The delicata squash plants that I transplanted to the bank are growing. I’ll see how it goes.

I am regularly visited by deer in the wee dark hours. They jump over my five foot fence with ease, but they’re not interested in my vegetable garden, though they will step in it from time to time.

It’s clear that coyotes follow them, for I have found their spoor.

in the fall they jump my 5' fence to scrape their antlers on small trees. They like Japanese Maples.

I think you're up 85 between the Volvos and the Bimmers, and I'm headed straight through the jungle out to Covington. If we could arrange something I'd be game.

THey didn't turn their nose up at my peach tree. It has a new shape this year. I put those spiral twist/spin on plastic truck protectors. Got them on before they started rubbing the first fall. THis year I was slow to react, and they got it and my young apple. Apple wasn't harmed much. Now my peach has only one true side going up, and lots of oozing dark sap where the trunk was rubbed and limbs snapped off. They didn't bother them first fall when I got those wraps on.

Garden center told me to put 4 stakes around tree about a foot or so out. Then wrap fishing line around that. They can't see the fishing line and hte feel of it spooks them when they try and rub. We have an alternate method involving a 30-30 and a jerky processor.

They always strip my green bean leaves when they get on up the trellis. Will go out one morning and all the leave from the chest to the knees are gone. Only lower and higher leaves remaining. They'll hit it only one, and the leaves grow back, and the beans keep producing. I use the mint spray to help and it does if I stay on it. I've been having trouble losing just one row of beans on just one side of trellis. Seedlings look great. Get a about 4 inches where the leaves are just ready to start transforming, then they're gone. THought I had something going on, but all 4 rows are within 4 feet of each other and it was just one row. No evidence at base of stem that there was a soil disease or fungus from the unending rain. THought maybe getting some drift from the road crew cutting and spraying. But it wasonly the one row. Rest are great. Then noticed tips of emerging permanent leaves looked like they were bit off. Have reseeded that one row for 3rd time now.

got some more cherry tomatoes off the vine this AM. probably throw them in a salad tomorrow.
I noticed some blooms coming out on my Goliath maters. And strawberries. Got clusters of BB size grapes coming out too. Bought that Razmatazz seedless red from Gurney's. Cross between a red seedless and muscadine. All the size and sweetness of a seedless red with all the growing properties of wild muscadine. Hardy, tough, no spraying. Season long producer, which is why I bought it. Kinda like having an indeterminate grape. Hardly grew last year. But has finally doubled this spring.

Now that I got a greenhouse up, I'm aiming for a Dwarf Myer and a Key Lime since I have a place for over wintering.

Covington is southeast of me (Gwinnett Co.). Let me know your route and schedule, and I’ll figure out where I can meet you in route.

Urban Coyotes ??

I typically run it 75 to 20. But, I could run it 75/285/20 and make it easier. I'll prob leave here around 1:00 central on Tuesday, putting me in your area around traffic time. Not sure how far you are from the junction, or Hwy 78 exit.

County coyotes. The deer follow the rivers. They detour through my area to feed on the muscadines organized in a vineyard on the property of an exclusive community bordering me on the north edge of my lot. So, the deer have generational pathways following the creek from the river to its source on the property with the muscadine vines. Coyotes follow the deer. In the wee hours one morning, I was awakened by the sounds of coyotes greeting each other. I snuck out onto my screened porch to see several together in my front yard.

So, you’re heading to Covington. How long will you be there? I ask because it may be easier to meet while you’re in that area than to catch you in transit.

I'm pretty well versed in most all that area. Ran around there a bunch growing up.

Will be there though the weekend. Meeting up with my wife there at her sisters, and her son and grandkids are coming up. Won't be around much though. Will be in the city a bit taking the kids to the Aquarium, Zoo, etc. I won't be able to solo out.

If you take the 75/285/20 route, I can meet you on Buford Hwy where it intersects 285. Just to the north of 285 on Buford Hwy, there’s a Farmers’ Market with a Waffle House and Pep Boys fronting the roadway and a Zaxby’s on the far corner. I can meet you in the large parking lot, either near the Waffle House or behind the Pep Boys. Will that work?

Perfect. Guess closer to Waffle House.

@ me when you set out on Tuesday and give me your estimated time to get to Buford Hwy and 285. Look forward to meeting you.
Sorry Bro. Major shift in plans. Won’t be doing any of that. Condensed version involves shingles, plus my wife not sure she ever had chicken pox plus one grand baby too young for those shots. And my wife has been around her sister for a week now and can’t risk being contagious to the baby. So I’m on my way to pick her up in Dalton and bring her home. Hopefully another time.

Bad luck. Another time 👍🏼

The past few days, an eastern phoebe has been grooming the baby caterpillars from my tomato plants, saving me the trouble. I’ve only found one that it missed. Previously, the cardinals have helped me in similar fashion, ridding my plants of the little chewers and saving me some time and care. The only birds to ever peck my ripening tomatoes have been mockingbirds, forcing me to bring out the netting. Thankfully, they’re too smart to get caught in it. They just avoid it and leave my maters unmolested.

apparently my full size tomatoes are determined to be determinant and come all at once even though I chose a non-determinant type.

one of my tomato plants has probably 2 dozen green tomatoes on it, and each would fill up your hand.

unforunately with all the rain and the travel I haven't been able to attend to my garden very much. that tomato plant has once again collapsed the cage I have for it. I would love to go thru and reinforce it, but I simply don't have the time.

I did get two cucumbers. some of the silk on the corn is starting to darken already. I am worried its rot, and not it actually being ready.

I bought tomato plants last year. They were supposed to be Cherokee Purple and Brandywine. Turned out they were a yellow small pear shaped tomato. This year family wants to know if I will have any of those little yellow tomatoes. They say it is their favorite.
I Use a metal fence post to support my cages. Use a heavy duty cage (tall). Quick fix.

Had the yellow pear cherry tomatoes one year. They were prolific producers. Tasty too.
