The Vols will be looking to end their recent struggles against the Razorbacks this weekend. UT's last series win against Arkansas came in 2005 while its last series win in Fayetteville was back in 2001. The two programs squared off in Fayetteville just a few weeks ago to close out the regular season as the Hogs rallied to win the series after the Vols took game one.
This weekend's NCAA Super Regional in Fayetteville will be a matchup between arguably the two most successful SEC programs of the past five years when the Vols and Razorbacks square off at Baum-Walker Stadium with a trip to Omaha on the line. Tennessee is making its fifth straight super regional appearance while Arkansas will be making its third appearance since 2021.
The Road to Omaha: Postseason Success During the Vitello Era
The Vols have become a postseason staple under Vitello as they prepare to play in their fifth consecutive NCAA Super Regional, which is the longest streak in program history. UT is the only program in the nation to has advanced to five straight super regionals (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025).
This weekend will mark the seventh super regional for Tennessee in program history. The Vols have won five of their previous six supers and have posted an 11-4 overall record in those six appearances. After winning the 2025 Knoxville Regional last week, UT is now 26-6 all-time in NCAA regional games played at Lindsey Nelson Stadium and 31-9 overall in NCAA postseason games at home.
The Vols have never lost a home regional in the current four-team format and have won seven of the nine NCAA regionals played in Knoxville (1995, 2001, 2005, 2021, 2022, 2024, 2025). The Big Orange are 15-1 in their last five NCAA regional appearances, 17-3 overall in regional games and 28-1 overall in NCAA tournament games under Vitello.
Doyle New UT Strikeout King, Among Finalists for Pair of National Awards
Junior southpaw Liam Doyle dethroned UT legend Luke Hochevar (154 in 2005) as Tennessee's single-season strikeout king after punching out 16 batters in his two appearances during the Knoxville Regional last weekend. The SEC Pitcher of the Year leads the nation with 158 strikeouts and 15.46 strikeouts per nine innings entering this weekend.
Doyle has had an All-American caliber junior season for the Vols and has arguably been the most dominant starting pitcher in the country, positioning himself as a finalist for a pair of prestigious national awards. Earlier this week, Doyle was named one of three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award and one of four finalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, which are considered the two most prestigious awards in college baseball.
The New Hampshire native is the first UT player since Chris Burke (2001) to be selected as a finalist for both the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy in the same year. He will look to become the first Volunteer to ever win the Golden Spikes Award and joins a select group of previous finalists from Tennessee that consists of program legends Todd Helton (1995), Burke (2001) and Hochevar (2005). Doyle is also just the fourth Vol to be named a finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, including the second under Vitello, joining Trey Lipscomb (2022). Helton is the only Tennessee player to ever win the Dick Howser Trophy, doing so in 1995.
