Mike Evans. Davante Adams. Deandre Hopkins. Larry Fitzgerald.

Not game breakers.

40 yard dash is possibly the dumbest metric for success as an NFL WR. Plenty of guys run sub 4.5 who are not good. Plenty more run in the 4.5 to 4.6 range who are perfectly capable to elite. There’s also basically no difference between 4.5 and someone like Antonio Brown at 4.47.

Those are all great possession receivers. You can be a star WR in the NFL and not be a game breaker. With that said, the best of the best wide receivers tend to have elite explosiveness.

It's why the 3 best WRs of the last 25 years are universally recognized as Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, and Calvin Johnson. All 3 were tall, fast, and could jump. Having every trait be elite makes you legendary. You can't be the best and not have elite speed.

And the standard people are holding Jeremiah Smith to isn't just that he'll be a good WR in the NFL. But people are calling him generational and in the category with some of the best we've ever seen. Well those guys tend to be very fast. They're just not elite in one category but in every category.

I really didnt want to weigh in on this, but most of the football world disagrees with you for good reason. Attached is an example comparing him to other OSU receivers who are NFL gamebreakers.

BTW, Marvin Harrison Jr. ran a 4.61. A dude who had 62 rec, 885yds, 8 TDs as a rookie and is the WR1 in Arizona.

Marvin Harrison Jr. is not gonna be a first ballot Hall of Famer. If your argument is Jeremiah Smith will be a good #1 option in the NFL, I'd agree with you. My comparison for him is Dez Bryant who was a really good #1 WR for the Cowboys. However, nobody is confusing Dez Bryant with Moss, T.O., or Calvin Johnson. People are talking about Jeremiah Smith as if he's in that mold. That's all I'm pushing back against.

I think Jeremiah Smith will be a very good NFL WR. I just don't see a generational talent because of his lack of elite explosiveness. And I would say the same for Marvin Harrison Jr not matter how good a rookie year he had.
