2025 Transfer Portal Thread

I’m also talking about the seniors in the portal as well.

Not sure who’s recruiting who, but some of those guys are ballers. As for the other seniors like Gainey who are waiting around, I don’t have any specific names, but I’m sure teams have guys they could return if it passes.
I’m sure there will definitely be some, but how many players are withdrawing from the draft, not pursuing summer league, passing on euro deals and are sticking around until July/August? I don’t think it’s near as many as you think.

Question for you guys - if you could have one or the other, would it be Miles or Gainey?

If Miles has a couple of years of eligibility left, he would be my clear choice. Otherwise, a toss up.
I think Vols best path is getting Miles but have the 5th year not get passed.

I just don't want to take the chance a bunch of teams get ballers back that were gone. We kind of know everyones rosters as they are now and adding Miles would put us top 5
I guess I just am not seeing all these possible names, and nobody has provided any…if the 5th year happens it’ll be July at the absolute earliest, which is well after the draft and summer league rosters being set.

Worst case scenario is that a concrete ruling comes thru and roster spots are full. This thread can not die for my mental well being. Don’t make me watch the Western Conference Playoffs, please. I don’t want those Nuggs. I need the good Nuggs.

The problem with allowing the 5th year rule to the previous year of players is that it opens the door for every player from years past to say “I should have a 5th year now” and you’re going to have 28-30 year old guys suing to be eligible and they would have an argument that would probably win in court.

The rule has to be “from now on” just like NIL was or it opens the door for chaos and ridiculous scenarios.

If Miles wants in, it makes a ton of sense to take him. He’s a SG who is a 43% 3 point shooter. That’s exactly what we need. If he wants to drive up the price and play the bidding war game, I understand passing though.
That % on 15 made threes in SEC play (20 games). Seems like it takes him some time to get it off. He is not overly reliant on his shot to produce but he probably isn't this big name I think he/his people think he might be

Well when you make money professionally in your sport you lose any chance of eligibility, so none of those players you mention would have a case if they were ever paid a dollar after college to play basketball. So that’s going to rule out 99.9% of the players who would be worth bringing back to play, colleges aren’t looking to bring back a 30 year old State Farm agent.

On top of that, what does from now on mean? What if say Gainey enrolls in classes for the summer/fall, does he count as a from now on because he’s still actively in school? Where exactly is that line?

As for lawsuits…a much easier lawsuit is this 1 singular class not being given a 5th year when the 4 classes before them got 5th years and every class after them gets 5th years, but just this 1 single class doesn’t get a 5th year…that’s a much easier lawsuit to win than the one you mentioned.

He’s essentially Mashack from an offensive aggression standpoint, he just shoots it’s better at each level by quite a bit as compared to Shack…but the FGA are similar given the minutes.

Do whatever it takes to get Miles. He’s the last missing piece this team has to have. He’s, imo, the potential difference in a sweet 16 roster vs a Final 4 roster..
That’s a strong take. Be honest… were you familiar with this guy prior to the portal opening this year? I watch a fair amount of basketball, especially in the SEC, and I had to google who he was a month or so ago when his name first popped up. He’s a guard that essentially makes 1 3P a game. That doesn’t really scream huge difference maker deep in the NCAA tournament like you’re suggesting.

At a clip like 43%, isn’t it a little surprising Miles didn’t attempt more 3’s? 9.4 ppg averaging 24+ min per game playing time and 83% from the line. Shot 51% inside the arc last season compared with Gainey’s 40% and Gainey’s 81% from the charity stripe. Not making an argument here, but if used efficiently it doesn’t seem like a stretch to imagine he could perhaps give us as much as JG did all tolled, and JG avgd 2 more ppg but played 3 minutes more than Miles and shot just 30% from deep. I don’t see a thing to hang a head over if we end up with Miles and not Gainey, certainly not to impugn the fine contribution Jordan made in Orange. 🍊

To answer your question, no, I wasn’t overly familiar with him. I more so meant I firmly believe this roster still has a glaring need at the 2 spot.. Either this guy or Abram would nicely fill that 6th man spot vacated by Gainey. Individually, I certainly don’t mean to say that Miles is some can’t-miss prospet…. BUT, he is still a proven commodity in the SEC, & plays the position this team still badly needs one more of…

To be fair, it's been pretty common knowledge and thoroughly discussed that we had all all of those guys all but locked up until the 11th hour.

@Stoerner Fumbles confirmed Rice is only the second player that we've drawn up paperwork for who ended up getting away. He also confirmed we had Freeman until a late after-hours play by Auburn on a holiday weekend over Easter weekend. McKneely was allegedly Tennessee's to lose until the snafu with Tennessee not having his major and him losing something like 20-ish credit hours toward graduation if he came here.

None of that discounts the idea of proceeding with caution around Basilio information, but thise examples of him "being wrong" aren't really fair. Everyone was wrong on those for varying reasons.

Sometimes TB can be super annoying but I do think he has connections. But he can be pretty hilarious too.

He missed on those guys just like every other insider in the know that said we were getting them.

This is accurate and appropriate for this situation. Basilio annoys me, but he is often right and wrong on an ambiguous sliding scale. Since I said what I said about Rice and Freeman, Barnes echoed it at the recent Orange Caravan stops. He explained that we had players who stated in black and white that they wanted to be here, but couldn’t due to money. Rice promised to give us a last call prior to any decision. He did. He literally said, he would come here if we met a number 20% under USC. We couldn’t get there due to the precedent it would set, and the need to adjust others. The nuance with Miles is this: We offered him a spot and a number. He can revisit that offer and number after his Georgetown visit, but any offer he gets there will be irrelevant. Yesterday when I said he isn’t currently in our plans, that’s why. You can’t blame the kids who might get life-changing money for their families now and possibly never again. You also can’t blame us for holding our strategic plan. There are too many personal variables in a dysfunctional system. For those of you who have asked about ZZ, it’s the same puzzle. Right now, there are no plans for his return. If the action passes and players are approved to return before he takes the next career step, that may change. Barnes may also tell him to take the money he can get elsewhere. We don’t know. We’d like to add another shooter. We might. It might be Miles or it might be Gainey. It might be someone else or no one else. Unfortunately I can only share the current information in a really volatile landscape.
