That's it.we had a significant advantage by being the first program with a legitimate NIL collective and operation
we were first to the table in a major way, and had an opportunity for it to be a big differentiator for us, but now everyone has caught up to us. as mentioned, some have passed us
Now, Nico hurt us -- not by leaving. I mean that if he had gone gangbusters last year we would be roiling hot.
The more I think about it in retrospect, no wonder Nico looked scatterbrained on the field: Look at what he was surrounded by every day on the phone and in person after games and when he went home. I imagine Nico was told every day how much the school was holding him back, yelled at after games for every little thing, and constantly ranted to about how his coaches were to blame.
Heupel meanwhile has done so well that a lot of people (not you) forget that he walked into a flaming dumpster. He has turned us around better and faster than almost anyone expected. Now we need successful players in the NFL. But it is hard to recruit those guys if you don't already have those guys. Tough to break through. A Nico who had played like we hoped he would last year and this coming year, then moved to the league as one of the top draft picks was supposed to be that guy for our offensive recruiting.
I still think it will happen. And it's weird (but now normal for us) to be talking about such a thing when coming off 30 wins in 3 seasons, making the playoffs, 2 NY6 bowl wins, and 2 wins in 3 years over Bama (3 straight if we hadn't been robbed in Birmingham). Just shows how quickly Heupel has changed our program and our outlook.
I do think, as I said earlier, that compared to our competition, football may actually be the laggard at UT in NIL terms. I hope we get a big influx soon. And that we have a great year. I'm anything but giving up on this year.
