Merk was never anticipating being a starting QB this season so it would be a surprise if he’s a flight risk.He knows the system way better than anyone coming out of the portal will. This isn’t a pivotal season for Heupel. This is a mulligan season. He had his starting QB leave at the worst time. Also, you don’t think Merk has earned the trust of the team? How do you know an experienced guy in the portal is just gonna come in learn the system, earn the respect of the team, unify the locker room and be able to operate the offense at a high level?
Now let’s say you get a good QB out of the portal and he wins the starting job. And Merk leaves. Then what? What if the portal QB gets hurt and Merk is gone? What if Merk leaves and some others feel like Heupel did Merk dirty and leave? What if Brandon sees this move and doesn’t like it? Some of you are not looking at the potential catastrophic situation we could be in. Yeah those are hypothetical situations but worth considering imo.
New center , 5 star RT that hasn’t played a down, 5 star LT that was hardly better than an average 3 star most of last year and new RG.I'm confused as to why our line is such a question mark. 5 star returning LT, All American LG, new C, ND starter RG, 5 star RT. And a plethora of other bodies. Am I the only one expecting a vast improvement in OL play?
Other OL coaches have done very well with far less is my point. He's also had 5 years to build this. All his guys. No excuses imo.New center , 5 star RT that hasn’t played a down, 5 star LT that was hardly better than an average 3 star most of last year and new RG.
A whole lot of unknowns there to assume vast improvement.
Could happen but that’s best case scenario, which may not be reached.
Exactly. Its about quick reads on WR option routes. Hooker succeeded because his internal clock was usually correct (reads 1-3 then RUN).honestly, Hype's offense isnt too difficult to learn, its very QB friendly. Not a very big playbook
Yeah all this, “afraid so and do leaves if you bring in someone better “ is chicken sh++ !He knows the system way better than anyone coming out of the portal will. I agree but it has to be pointed out that defenses have adjusted as well, those empty spaces Hooker feasted on aren't there, or at least not there as often now. This, though I’d add “when it breaks down, get yards with his legs.” Hooker was so dang good at making his reads and then knowing that, if something looked wrong, it meant he could run. His read would look left based on alignment—if all of those routes ended up covered, it’s because someone vacated the box to help.
Does anybody recognize how long NICO was holding onto the ball here. Longer than the average bear. We also have no idea how much tape he was reviewing nor how much he was thinking before throwing the ball. Talent yes processing speed slower than expected.Exactly. This is not some rocket scientist NFL lite system. Look at how that worked out for Jimbo at A&M: all the talent in the world but kids couldn't run it.
Even the other NFL lite systems like UGA, Bama under Saban, and OSU last year are watered down. At the end of the day it's about athletes.
