'25 QB transfer prospects (Joey Aguilar)

I know this list is hypothetical, but the amount of hate people are putting on Haynes King is ridiculous.

In 2 less games than Nico (really 3-4 less games as the back up took the primary snaps vs Miami and NCST) Haynes had a 72% completion percentage, 2114 passing yds, 14/2 TD to Int ratio, 587 Yds rushing and 11 Rushing Tds.

If you are keeping score at home, that is a better YPA than Nico, double the amount of rushing yards per game, significantly better turnover ratio, and a completion percentage that Nico could only dream about. And that is without considering that GT's offense isn't nearly as dynamic as ours and has lesser talent.

In 2023, when King was fully healthy, he had over 3500 total yards and 35 Total TDs. You can count how many TN Qbs have done that in history using exactly 3 fingers. If you watched him play any of 2024 or 2023 and came away with the conclusion that he wasn't impressive, I highly question your ability to judge anything football related.
The hate is mostly at the idea that we'd pay him $4 million to come be our QB for a year, and then expect him to be the catalyst towards a playoff berth with no spring practice and learning an entirely new playbook and personnel.

He's not awful. He's also not great. Comparing his numbers as a 23 year old senior in the ACC to Nico as a 19 year old RS freshman in the SEC is a little disingenuous, too. If we landed him as competition for Merk and GMac at $1 million, I don't think there would be a ton of backlash. It's the idea of paying him $4 million and handing him the keys that has people thinking that's a bad investment.

Yes, but Merk or the transfers they are referencing will end up leaving after 2025 regardless of who wins in that scenario.

They need to elevate one of the walk-ons at QB or get a grad transfer like Gaston if not Gaston himself
Who will also be gone at the end of the year. And he's not as good as the transfers being considered.

I'm seriously asking. SO if he's residing in Tennessee as a student, he would still be considered a resident of his last/home state?

I'm sure there are regulations I don't know about, but otherwise I'm wondering why folks are assuming he'd be paying CA taxes while seemingly a resident of Tennessee, paid by a company in Tennessee?
Yes

Exactly! None of us are scouts. My whole point considering he said he’d question our judgement of football related things.

But I encourage you to go look at the numbers for both 2023 and 2024 and see who he put numbers up against.

For example he threw 5 of his TD passes vs VMI and Ga St in 2024.

In 2023, he threw 8 of his TDs vs BGSU (a game they lost) and SC St. He had good games vs Ole Miss, UNC, Louisville and everything else was meh.

Vs Clemson: 13-31, 129 yards, 2 TD / 4 INT
Vs UGa: 11-20, 158 yards, 0 TD / 0 INT
Vs UCF: 7-13, 87 yards, 1 TD / 1 INT
Vs BC: 14-32, 204 yards, 1 TD / 3 INT
Vs Miami: 12-25, 151 yards, 1 TD / 2 INT

Is that enough numbers to support my opinion of him not being a good passer? (Or hasn’t proven to be as of yet)
Yes. That is enough numbers, thank you.

No fan should get stuck on any one quarterback. This is going to be a process with a ton of moving parts so we should just let Heupel and Danny work. They've represented us better than anyone in 20 years and we should support whoever they bring in, no matter who it is

Basilio reporting we met with someone over the weekend. Not being reported by other outlets because it’s technically tampering. Dan Lanning notified our staff about all this 3 weeks ago so we’ve probably been working on this longer than many believe.

Lol and who do you scout for? Which staff?

I’ll give you this - he’s great to go on an unexpected heater vs a top tier team once per season.

Other than that, meh. Tough kid tho.
I don't need to scout for anyone. He has the stats. He has the game film. Currently projected as a 4th round pick in 2026. ESPN him ranked as the 9th best QB in the country for 2025. So he's highly regarded around people with a lot more football knowledge than you or I.

Does that mean he would be a guarantee to come here and succeed? Of course not. But calling him a "meh QB" with nothing to back up the claim is just ignorant. He's proven that he is a quality college QB.

You realize you are allowed to be prodcutive with your legs as well, right? Or does not matter to you in an offense designed for a QB to run the ball around 10 times per game (or more)?

What were Nico's numbers when you remove the cuopcakes? Did we make it to the CFP with him as QB1 or no?

I can understand this argument a little. I don't agree with it, but it's more reasonable than the other arguments being made.

We all know Nico underperformed.

I’d prefer to not have another non-passing threat as QB. I don’t think he’s a good passer. It’s an opinion, only differing from yours.

King has heart and can run the ball, yes. Would rather have someone that can threaten with the arm more, personally.

He doesn’t have the stats.

He also threw 16 INTs in 2023 and has fumbled 9 times the last 2 seasons with 6 of those coming in 2024. Luckily for him he only lost 3 of them but 9 is a big number.

These numbers would get you benched in a Heupel offense.

I just don't think he can run this system. He has a wet noodle of an arm. There's no way he can stretch the field vertically like we need, get the ball out quick enough and with enough velocity to reach our WR's on those quick reads to the sideline. Those are really tough throws to make and you need a relatively big arm for it.

Partly because he was hurt, but King never threw the ball downfield. Most of his passes were within 5 yards of the LoS. Doesn’t sound like a CJH QB.

I hope Tennessee reaches out to Malik Murphy. I think he would fit the offense great. Put up big numbers at Duke last year before transferring to Oregon State. He said in an interview it wasn’t his choice to transfer but Duke wanted to go in a different direction and got the Tulane qb.

Yeah he’s who I want. He did pretty decent at Duke and has a great arm. He’d probaly be even better in the right system, I watched enough of Duke last season to know their offensive playcalling made ours looks like a Kyle Shanahan offense.

Plus, I have a friend who always talked about how much he sucked all the time, and that guy is never right about anything. So if he thinks Murphy sucks, he’ll probably win the heisman in 2025.

Not sure this has been posted anywhere yet… not sure how I feel about it either

He wouldn't be a take imo. RS Sophomore with some playing time but unproven.

Think we want a proven commodity at this point, preferably someone who won't hinder the development of our young QBs (meaning 1 maybe 2 years, if they are really good, of eligibility left).

Well I think Avery Johnson is a pipe dream. The young man grew up in Kansas and has been a fan of Kansas St. his whole life. His dream school as individuals say..

Noodle arm definitely doesn't jive with what I have seen or the scouting reports on him. Maybe you watched him after hurt his should mid season.

Regardless, Riley Leonard is also on the weaker side for what it's worth. Yes I understand it isn't the same offense. Just pointing out that QB's with weaker arms can still have a lot of success at the college level. Dillon Gabriel ran this same offense very successfully at UCF and he has a mediocre arm as well.
