Trade Wars and Tariffs

That is not free trade.
Yes it is. Free trade means no tariffs on imports or subsidies on exports. It does not mean that a nation abandons any and all control over trade.

But you’re right, we should ban all Australian lamb imports instead of placing tariffs.

Why? We import tons of lamb and hardly export at all.

Man you guys reach around your azzes to scratch your elbow when trying to excuse other nations trade barriers.

Why should we allow Australia to freely import lamb when they purposely ban US beef? If nobody in Australia wants to buy US beef so be it, but banning a similar product from importation simply to protect a domestic industry should be punished.

I think it's interesting that people use phones made by forced child labor to post criticism of EV owners over conditions in the cobalt mines.
My parents subjected me to forced child labor. Paid me in Tic Tacs. Made me wear clogs too. All this will be unraveled by my daily therapy sessions. Someday.

Once again: why?

Why should we start a trade dispute with a partner with whom we have a zero-for-zero tariff scheme and a trade surplus over their refusal to import a product that they neither want nor need? And why would it make any sense to respond by banning a product that Americans want and that we have to import in order to meet demand?

How do you know they don't want US beef? Why should US farmers be barred from even trying to sell their product inside Australia while we allow theirs to freely import? Again, you're reaching around your azz to excuse unfair trade practices.

We should for sure attempt to get free trade across the board. But what we shouldn’t do is attempt to fight the entire planet at once.

Which is what Trump apparently thought was a good idea. Rather than going after the worst offenders or key targets first like China, he just came out swinging without forethought

This is up there with some of the dumbest arguments that I've seen on here.

We have the best possible trade agreement with Australia. They buy more from us than we buy from them. But because they don't want a specific product from us (one that we have sell to plenty of other partners, and one that they have in surplus), we should either make Americans pay more for Australian goods, of we should ban the import of something we don't produce enough of and Americans happily buy.

I absolutely agree with you on this, I don't understand his method and quite frankly think he's picked a battle he can't win.

What Bama and others are doing is excusing damn near every unfair trade practice used against us, why should we accept any unfair practices that keep US goods out of foreign markets?

I don't know how many times I have to say to you that I oppose the method Trump is using. We should not be placing blanket tariffs around the world, we should be placing reciprocal tariffs and restrictions where applicable. If Australians don't want to buy US beef, so be it there is nothing wrong with that but arbitrarily banning our product while getting to freely import your similar product is not free trade and should be rectified.

Your argument is ridiculous and the reason other countries routinely take advantage of us.

Beef and lamb are not similar products.

Beef and lamb are not similar products.

Laughable.

Let me help you out by explaining it in a way a Gump will understand. Your sister, mother and female cousin are all similar, your sister and brother are not similar. If you were born in KY it still should resonate with you.

If only this example actually worked, your snark would be justified. But here we are.

Allow me to help:

A golden retriever and a jack russell terrier are similar. A golden retriever and a siamese cat are not similar.

Sure there are. Just like the US has had tariffs on a plethora of imports for decades.

What matters is that the US had few, if any, unbalanced tariff schemes. Tariffs have never been a significant issue in either direction. Which is why Trump and Co didn't base the new tariffs on what other nations were charging, but instead focused on trade imbalance.

And the trade imbalance is largely a result of labor cost imbalance. That's the issue that our "leadership" (across the board - not just political "leadership") have caused, and not one US "leader" will address. We can argue all day long that that Chinese labor is underpaid or that Chinese currency is valued incorrectly, but the argument doesn't stand when you realize our labor costs are disproportionate to those of virtually every other county in the world. We are our own worst enemy, and we are completely unwilling to come to grips with that. When Clinton made his "it's the economy, stupid" comment, he really should have understood and made it all about inflation and inflationary drivers. US policy makers just simply are not going to address inflationary drivers.

Beef and Lamb are consumable meat, if they can import their lamb to the US we should be able to import our beef to Australia. I just can't wrap my head around why anyone would disagree with this.

Knowing Trump’s personality and the sycophants that he has in the cabinet, I’m relatively certain that cabinet meetings are very similar to those in North Korea. Much like it is with Kim Jong Il’s “advisors”, 99% of the time is spent kissing Trump’s butt and 1% on actual policy. It’s just the way Trump is built and there is nothing anybody can do about it. Contrarians will be eliminated.

I read an article last night that said the commander at whatever the weird name that Thule, Greenland now goes by just made a conciliatory comment to the people of Greenland after hogsbreath's visit (sorry hog - no relationship implied). My thought: "she's dead meat." Saw the announcement today that she was fired. A real leader can appreciate and should seek alternative opinion. One who doesn't is weak and insecure - we tend to go lightly and just claim they are egomaniacs.

This was the comment in her email that got her rightfully fired. You were in the military, could you have imagined one of your commanders putting out a memo with something like this in it?
She wrote that she "spent the weekend thinking about Friday's visit -- the actions taken, the words spoken, and how it must have affected each of you." "I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base," Meyers wrote in the email, which was communicated to Military.com.

Because we want their lamb and they don't want our beef.

If you are going to make an argument about banning an Australian import, why not their beef?

They can't have it to know if they want it. My goodness you are something else.

And yes we should ban their beef imports also.

First I forgot it was Vance not hogsbreath; but you are right, her comment couldn't fly. It needed to be said, but she had to have known it was career suicide to say so. The Trump administration should never have alienated the people of Greenland in the first place; I completely agree with the commander's comment, but I also completely understand that she was wrong per the chain of command in stating it. Still think "J D Vance" has the ring and appearance of a cut rate second string auto parts chain.

I've considered myself to be independent but pretty much aligned with the GOP. I've always thought we need more outsiders in DC, but Trump is appalling - a flaming idiot with no filter between brain and mouth and completely unable to learn a damn thing.
