We'd be dumb to not keep the option open. It can be burned with almost no atmospheric pollution and the solid waste can be sealed in abandoned mines.

The option is open. Coal will just sit there. It's dirty and dangerous to extract and dirty to burn. R&D should be spent on nuclear, imo, rather than making coal 'cleaner'.
No one mines coal cause they want to. It's not like people of WV yearn for the mines. They'd rather have well-paying jobs not in the mines.

How familiar are you with the coalfields? I can tell you that those high paying jobs are very few and far between there and many would jump at a job in the mines. No one mines lithium or nickel because they want to, if you look at it that way.

Yes, but nuclear is dangerous and dirty to extract, and produce dirty and dangerous bi-product waste... and it can cause large disasters.

The majority of mining needed for electric and most green energy is done by slave labor and it still ot cost effective to scale
