2025 Transfer Portal Thread

My hot take…

If he’s going to cost what it looks like it’s going to cost, and that severely limits what else we can add, I would prefer we pass. Much like what you said in your last sentence I definitely have a fear that he’s not sure fire dominant good, he doesn’t have the deal Flagg came in with, it’s as you mentioned more Phillips like but taller. Obviously if we land him I’ll hope to be wrong, but I just have that fear given his build, he also hasn’t been dominant in the last year against quality competition, and then our history with 5 stars and Barnes also.

Now if Pratt is willing to fund this campaign and Ament is saw as gravy on top of other pieces then I’m all for it, but if he keeps us from adding other all league type talents I think I would rather add 2-3 proven guys over just Ament.
Freshmen are high risk high reward. Maybe we get Brandon miller, maybe we get Jullian Phillips. Don't disagree about if we can spend and get solid stretch 4 let's do it. But Ament still worth the risk I think

Kind of weird you guys are talking yourself out of a top 5 player who could be a top 5 pick, just because Julian Phillips didn’t live up the his hype. JP’s offensive ability is nowhere close to Ament. Did y’all see the first 3 points scored in the McD game? The move he pulled and drained that three in that dudes eye is something JP could only do in his dreams. Looked like a move KD would do as a freshman.

Oh no, I always say take top 10 talent period. JP had a disappointing year, he was an anomaly though.

Perhaps, but I'd still prefer to avoid the one and done types. Maybe with a deeper bench, a guy like Ament won't have as tough a transition, but to come into this league and play defense the way Barnes demands is a big ask of a HS player. I'd rather roll with guys who've been through a year or two at the college level and are a bit more mature physically.
You know DK was a 1 and done?. Chaz, Igor, etc.. The transfer portal makes every player a potential 1 and done

If we don’t get Ament can we use those funds on that freshman that just entered, Wesley Yates

Gill, Rice, Yates would be niceeeee

He averaged 14ppg, 47% FG, 44% 3PT and had 1.3 steals per game

30 points against Purdue
21 against Maryland
Sounds like UK…

Who wants to be the next DK and Lanier?

If you back to top 50 transfers in 2023 and 2024, you could argue that Barnes has had the most impactful one-year portal transfer over the past 2 years with Knecht and Lanier. Guys that both produced and led team to conference and post season success. Walter Clayton and Johni Broome are obviously impressive, but this is also their 2nd and 3rd years with their programs respectively.

Gillespie has chance to make it 3 years in a row if we complete the team around him appropriately. Heck, I think the portal may have made this easier for Barnes to build a competitive team. Gainey turned into a very good 2-year transfer. Milicic was inconsistent but his numbers were similar to the 4-year starter he replaced in JJJ. Dubar wasn't what we thought he would be (potentially bad scout on him or made offer too quick) but there were some extenuating circumstances early in season with him that probably effected his play the entire year.

Gillespie isn't a shooter like Chaz or DK. They were both volume shooters before they came to TN.

Are you trolling?

Gillespie averaged 11 attempts a game the last 2 seasons and shots over 48% FG & 38% 3PT on his career. And shot better from FT last year than either of them have in their career.

No he won’t take 15 attempts a game though like Chaz & DK did, because he’s gonna be dishing 4+ assists a game too

Gillespie shot 41% from 3 last year. He made 84 and took 214. But he’s also a PG, so he also distributes the ball.
That kinda proves my point. I don't think we are looking for him to light it up unless we are treating him like a Gainey/Lanier role. Can play the point when needed but want him off the ball mostly.

He will play PG but will be a scoring threat. Surround him with someone like Ruce and you have two guys who shoot at least 37% from 3.
