Trade Wars and Tariffs

If yall don't mind explaining what are the theoretical benefits of these tariffs? I dumb as dogsh*t on this and I don't know what to think. I see whats happening and its damn near impossible to find an explanation without political bias.

The intent is to use our leverage (access to sell to the US consumers) to create opportunities for America. Instead of giving the access away for free the threat of tariffs are intended to get something in return. Bring back manufacturing - especially for strategically critical goods (medical supplies, pharma, components necessary for defense). Bring in capital to construct those plants. Create well paying jobs. Open up foreign markets for US based businesses to sell to - eliminate or reduce THEIR tariffs, remove obstructive regulations. Don’t assist bad players like China that cheat. Several hundred billion dollars can be collected from the countries that won’t agree to the concept of fair trade.

We’ve not been treated fairly for at least 80 years. All of the administrations since (Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ, etc) have failed to do anything about the inequitable arrangements.

Tariffs are the method to get our trading partners (competition) to negotiate fair, free trade.

The possible benefits are decreased value of the dollar (makes our debt cheaper) and possible decrease tariffs from other countries

But it’s more likely really, really bad. My only hope is that Trump’s ego puts a stop to this because of all the bad publicity

Bought a lot of Ford this morning around 9.11 a share. Hoping to get out around 9.50
Ford just doesn't move much. You might be holding awhile. I had some a year ago about this same price. The dividend yield is good though

The right wing coping is pretty pathetic. I checked my personal Charles Schwab account.. most of my gains are gone....wiped out. I am afraid to even look at my retirement. I'm technically 12 years from retirement. I can't imagine how someone who was set to retire feels. For any MAGAs that's wondering, that's called empathy. Although I have years to hopefully recover my losses, those that were going to retire soon will have to either continue working or be SOL. I hate it for them, they did everything right and boom. I guess they could've been born rich. 🤷🏾‍♂️
Coping?

I'm 4 months from retirement, and I'm not worried. Grow a spine and pull for American for once

That's a big assumption. Heck, Trump slapped 10% on Australia with whom we have a free trade agreement, effective tariffs of 0%, and a trade surplus. If Australia gets no love, why would Vietnam be any different?
Vietnam is a sweatshop.

Think of the children.

That’s rich coming from him. Imagine the reaction if the Trump administration did some of the same things that happened during the Obama administration. I guess Barack forgot what happened to journalists under his watch. Hacking the Associated Press, bugging Sharyl Attkisson’s computer, labeling James Rosen an unindicted co-conspirator just for doing his job, and issuing subpoenas to countless other reporters to force them to reveal their sources and testify in criminal cases. His administration prosecuted nine cases involving whistleblowers and leakers, compared to just three by all other previous administrations combined.
