I was shooting with a friend sighting in a new 5.56 rifle and had one of the soft swinging targets. After several shots was annoyed how from backstop impacts you'd expect hits but the target itself didn't so much as twitch. On closer inspection all shots hit the target but punched perfectly clean little holes. The bullets were zipping through without even enough resistance to make the target noticeably move at all.anyone who has shot pretty much anything knows the whole "rip the ear off" is bs.
go to any gun range. take any (non shotgun) gun of any caliber at any range, and shoot the edge of the the PAPER target. do you rip the whole thing off because you grazed the edge? or does it barely register it with a flap from the slight tug.
if paper can survive a graze, an ear can survive a graze.
i bet swampy thinks shooting someone with a .22 causes them to get blown off their feet and thrown a couple feet.
