2025 Transfer Portal Thread

Haven't been keeping up. Are we expected to land any transfers soon? The few posts I've read over the last page or two makes it sound like we're losing out on guys we want to schools willing to pay more. Do we have less BB NIL than other schools?

I tend to agree with you that Basillio cuts, pastes and shares more than he researches or pounds the pavement. I don’t know his POV on Barnes. I don’t listen to the TB show. It is true that CRB has put a focus on balanced scoring and players who can get to the basket this off-season. It’s a tough market for that product and we aren’t currently financially equipped. When you have a kid who wants to come here, but can’t because of the money, we need to adjust.
I don't think Barnes has ever "ignored" a prospects offensive skills, but I do think he prioritizes defense and character/work ethic. The idea that he's just suddenly going to flip the script and aim for offense is a bit of a stretch. Everything I see quoted from basilio I've seen posted on a UT board. I think he's of a mind that he can coach up those type players offensively but it's far more difficult to take a volume shooter who doesn't exert himself defensively or a guy with questionable character and transform that kind of individual. With the portal, I think his job is much easier because you have a body of work at the college level to refer to. As for the money, I got no idea where we stand in NIL funds or how we compare to the average SEC programs in terms of spending. Pretty clear UK, UL and Arky are spending like drunken sailors, but they clearly have found a way to get deep pockets to buy in and invest. Maybe our position as a "football" school leads to giving a disproportionate amount to football? Of course, that's the cash cow so perhaps the investment is actually proportionate? That is where our bread is buttered.

One other thing that I'm curious about is what kind of motivation do some of these kids have to really work hard and improve themselves if they've been paid millions of dollars. Odds are a lot of them know they're not going to the NBA and that this is their pay day. Might be wrong, but some of these high dollar investments don't seem to offer much of a ROI when the dust settles. I'm fine with what Barnes puts on the court. No expectations other than to play hard and be solid kids.

We may be or we may not be. Depends on how you view it. From a fan's perspective or a Coach's perspective, let the process work and trust in Barnes or move on.

I think the narrative ignores players like Lanier and Knecht who were not stellar on defense, but very good scorers. I think the plan is to spread the scoring out so that teams can’t switch us off.

Than we didn’t really add a offensive post… man wish we could
Yeah, same thing we did last year. There were guys available last year who could help inside on offense, but we didn't pursue them. It's the same this year with real post scorers like Nehimiah Turner and Marqus Johnson. I don't know how you get to the next level without scoring at the rim, either with athletic slashers or post players. Look at the final four teams this year.

Yes. Gillespie, Queen and Rice are apparently very tight. My naïveté got me excited about Queen after his ESPN interview, but obviously his draft stock is too high. Rice is a strong possibility. In many ways I like his complete game more than McNeely. We’re going to need to solve the money thing.
Unfortunate the Haslams spent $200 million on a perverted injured QB instead of giving to their favorite university

Didn’t realize this thread was a thing until now, how are we looking with transfers? Also what about HS guys like Amet

I think that may ultimately be a good thing because when the Haslams were bankrolling, it was coming in with a lot of negative influence.

They very well could still be giving, but that name is less associated with our athletics nowadays. Probably for the best, as you can see how successful we were with their influence and how great the Browns are under their ownership.

Vanderbilt transfer forward Jaylen Carey could be a target for Tennessee to fortify its frontcourt even more. Carey averaged 8.0 points and 5.7 rebounds in 33 games after following coach Mark Byington from James Madison. It is likely there is interest on both sides.

Why wouldn't we want Haslam influence? I mean, just look at the wonders they've done with Cleveland....

If I have to blue font that for anyone to recognize it as sarcasm, then just log off because you're too dumb for the internet.
