Pete Hegseth, Trump Dept of Defense nominee…

That "vegetable" can intellectually run circles around you. Stick to what you're good at, licking boots.
Nothing to see here, just the Secretary of Defense with a Russian email address. It's amazing that "Christians" hate minorities so much, they've decided to destroy the entire country. America is Russia's bitch and conservatives are like, this is fine. Russia is good.

In what way? Yeah there are things that are automatically classified but if PH said it wasn't at the time he posted it it wasn't. Complete Bull Scatology I know but that's how it works
So to help BB and others with clarification let's play a little what if?

So I'm hanging out with PH and he starts into what would certainly "seem" to be some pretty sensitive information. He's saying we're going to be moving "this here" and "that there" in preparation for something that's going to happen around yadayada time frame targeting such and such. Then he gets a phone call, says he has to leave and walks off. Now intuitively I'm sitting there assuming there's zero chance this is something I'm supposed to take to X or Facebook with but when given no instruction about how to handle that information am I in possession of classified information or not? If not what liability would I hold in disseminating that information?

I'm inclined to dig in more:

If it wasn't the agency head, someone could be in trouble if they didn't have the president and/or agency head having their backs. The lower people have less or no ability to impact classification. This happened at a routine basis at some of the places I was at.... what is routine... monthly.

What was the punishment - slap on the wrist but it usually involved giving someone with a clearance material they didn't have a need to know i.e. gave the wrong person the wrong information. (there is more than one component to this)

This situation though is like asking someone what their favorite color is, and than telling them they are wrong. (imo)

If I were to dislike Hegseth, it would be because I think he is probably part neocon.... not this. Vance is awesome though.

My beef with the situation has nothing to do with democrats and republicans. These idiots habitually mishandle classified information and then gaslight the public about its seriousness.

Edit: I’m not claiming you are being partisan here, just making the statement in general. I’ve been in and out of SCIF’s for nearly 20 years so this crap bugs me.

You can have that opinion if you wish, I generally agree with you.

The problem with that is massive large scale operations in detail have been given to the media over the last 30-35 years and nobody had a problem with it. However, you are free to have that opinion but it comes down do you trust Trump or not.

I mean I kind of agree with you, but my question is why is this a problem now?
I would say its always been a problem, just like it was with Hillary and GWB. This isn't the first time people have been outraged. It is being discussed now because it is the latest incident.

The issue is, we have had massive attacks which prior administrations have given lots more data points and nobody cared.
Yes they did care, the only thing that changed is the side of the aisle the outrage is coming from. In both instances it was wrong, and in both instances whitewashing and water carrying to dismiss it is wrong.

I've found folks that deal with this information regularly and follow all the rules are the ones that have legitimate non-partisan outrage whenever this stuff happens. It could literally have life and death consequences.

If the email is indeed him, I think that's enough right there to be asking "WTF?" A phone is just more of the same. The +7 code validates nothing in the mystery, though. If this is some kind of espionage frame job of Pete by Russians, then that could explain why it's a +7 number.

But also, I have to ask why would they do this to PH when we're changing our tune on Ukraine?

I have no idea what significance this has, but it is, as I said, interasante

First the classifying authority (in this case PH) would have had to place a security classification on the information. If he never did that, then technically it was never classified.

Yeah, I know it's BS but that is how it works. Goldberg was in a no win situation, if he disclosed it prior the admin could have claimed he published classified information.

Not true. There is information that is considered "born classified." So it's classified until someone with authority says otherwise.

But he didn't say that it was unclassified at the time. In fact, he said that the chat was clearing OPSEC. After it leaked, he claimed that it was unclassified all along, but you can't retroactively make something unclassified.

OPSEC doesn't necessarily mean anything was classified.

Look, I get it. It's total bullkaka but Pete would be the classifying authority for the DOD and if he says it wasn't classified it wasn't classified. WTF can you do? That's the system.

You're not wrong. But I'd bet dollars to donuts that if Goldberg had gone to print before the attack was completed, that chat would be classified.
