Trade Wars and Tariffs

I imagine Alberta is not happy at all. Canada is fooked.
Opposition and Conservative Party leader Pierre M. Poilievre pushed multiple times for a no-confidence vote late last year, before the Canadian Parliament went into recess on Jan. 6. When the parliament returns on March 24, Poilievre could revive his move to collapse the current Liberal coalition.

Canadian law also requires a general election by the end of October if Carney’s coalition stands. Carney is also able to call for an election, and almost 86 percent of Canadians supported an immediate general election to respond to Trump’s tariffs when polled in February.

Polling leading up to the election suggested Carney might survive an imminent general election, but the Liberal Party began trailing the Conservatives again in the last week.

looks likethey will still have an Oct election, as Trudeau has only been replaced by his party.

Never let a crisis go to waste..

Seems Smith has become the frontleader to replace Trudeau as PM. Poilievre was basically a shoe in before these tarrifs. Ironically, Canada will be wrecked even further.
Smith has no appeal outside her province and won’t be running in the coming federal election anyhow

It isn't just low skill labor. Automotive, Computer, etc. China is replicating and producing everything. This is sinking Europe. We are only staying a float because tariffs are forcing companies to build here. I am seeing this at my job.
It's a good thing the US is turning its back on science and education. Should prove to be quite the gambit to address this quandry.

One word answer.

Trump

Lol.

I can tell you my parents were much harder on W than Trump about tariffs, and I think W just did a steel tariff with China. At least, that's all I remember them griping about

Carney is an interesting choice for the Liberals. He's really emphasizing the fact that he's never held political office because he might be the ultimate establishment figure in a political environment that still probably favors anti-establishment figures. Worked for Goldman, ran the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, was something of an informal adviser to Trudeau, led ESG at Brookfield, was on the board of Bloomberg, and worked for the UN. He's been smart enough so far to claim that he isn't a proponent of the extremely unpopular carbon tax in Canada. Does not really have a lot of charisma and comes off as the epitome of a corporate executive.

Having said that, the Liberals poll numbers have skyrocketed over the last few weeks in the wake of the tariffs, and Carney is leaning into the us vs. them feeling many in the country have versus the US. The Conservatives were primed for a runway election win but the polling now seems to indicate if it were held today, they'd still be favored but by nowhere near as much. Trump is not popular really among anybody in Canada, even the Conservatives, and Poilievre is increasingly seen as too close to Trump to stand up to him.

its turning its back on a federally mandated one size fits all program that hasn't produced respectable results in a long time, as the goal is getting lost in the weeds.

just like there is a difference between Fauci and science, there is a difference in the DoE and education.

Most of us here in the south know Mark Twain, and I think he has a great line that represents how many of us feel: "I never let schooling get in the way of my education".

the DoE has failed on even the basics, so I guess I shouldn't be shocked they couldn't teach you critical thinking.

not letting schooling getting in the way of your education doesn't mean: No schooling. it just means, don't be limited by only knowing what the school tells you.

There is a lot that is: wrong, biased/not presented fairly, or just flat out left out.

Hmmm... what I miss today.

Trump imposes 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.

No. Wait. Trump does that then undoes that hours later.

It's 4D chess by the Grandmaster. No. Wait. Correction: He's a ****ing moron.

For those of you paying attention with the eyes wide open, the Canadian public is going to totally f*** us here. They rightfully hate Orangeman. They're gonna stop buying our products and services. This is not how you go about helping our economy.

Well, you obviously can't wait to see if these things work out. This will hurt them much, much more. True Doh even cried on TV while admitting it.

It's negotiation and a staring contest. We have much more leverage than they do.

Again, you should probably calm down, take a Xanax, and see how this all unfolds. Too many times, folks have pointed to Trump's stupid antics, and they end up working out.

He cuts aid to Ukraine, everyone's screaming about the stupidity of the Russian-President. Then it works and Ukraine agrees to the deal and cease-fire they said they wouldn't agree to...

We live in such a divided, impatient culture and it's unhealthy. We have a segment here just praying to their flying spaghetti monster that Trump will fail. They seem to hope all the bad happens, just to vindicate their hatred.
