Trump Suspends $5 Billion Electric Vehicle Charging Station Program

President Donald Trump’s administration halted the $5 billion Biden electric vehicle charging program, which has been criticized for its poor production of charging stations.

Emily Biondi, the associate administrator for the Office of Planning, Environment, and Realty, in a letter to the state Department of Transportation directors on Thursday, said the administration has suspended the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program.

“As result of the rescission of the NEVI Formula Program Guidance, FHWA is also immediately suspending the approval of all State Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment plans for all fiscal years. Therefore, effective immediately, no new obligations may occur under the NEVI Formula Program until the updated final NEVI Formula Program Guidance is issued and new State plans are submitted and approved,” the official continued.

The program had aimed to create more than 6,000 charging stations and has served as an embarrassment for then-Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

In August 2024, then-President Joe Biden claimed the administration had built 500,000 charging stations across the country, where, in reality, they had built only eight stations as of May 2024.

No way Trump would usurp the authority of Musk.

This helps Tesla given they've already got some semblance of a charging infrastructure out there.....

Just widens the gap between Tesla and their competitors
Yah. It was a joke that could elicit only a couple of responses.

Either it was a great program that would be increasing the acceptance of EVs, thus benefits Elon. Thus this isn't about abusing the system for personal gain.

Or it was a huge waste of taxpayer money and needs to be shut down, thus just one more example of legitimately finding and ending waste.

I did some digging, and $616M has thus far been awarded for charging site installation. To date, 57 locations have been opened. They have 4+ chargers per site. That isn't even going to register on the radar.

The hard-earned money of taxpaying Americans should not cover the cost for the luxuries of the nation’s elite.
Please acknowledge I'm part of the elite now (they say it again later)
This bill would add a $1,000 tax onto the purchase of an EV to cover the cost of road maintenance.
Market manipulation should count whether it's right or left. It won't but it should

called the Fair Sharing of Highways and Roads for Electric Vehicles (Fair SHARE) Act, is being led and sponsored by senators Deb Fischer (R-Nebraska), Pete Ricketts (R-Nebraska), and Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyoming).

Fair share?
The days of liberal elites in their expensive EV’s getting a free pass are over; they are contributing to wear and tear on our roads, and they should be forced to pay their fair share in repairs just like the rest of us,” said Senator Lummis.
There's "fair share" again. Could have sworn that was a leftist idea

Fischer took $356,393 from the oil and gas industry during the last election cycle. It is one of her top contributors. As for Barrasso, he takes even more money from the oil and gas industry: $781,381 during the last cycle.

So cutting subsidies and applying taxes more equally is a leftist idea?

I don't think it violates too many conservative principles to pay for what you use. You use the roads, you should help pay for their maintenance.

If they were slapping a road tax on PV panels or something, that would be pretty counter to a conservative approach.

I don't care about getting rid of the tax break. However the Trump admin has floated the idea of a break for gas trucks. That will have a much greater impact but won't have the boogeyman ev attached

The nation's elite with their luxury vehicles must pay their "fair share" instead of sponging off the poor? It's cheap class politics. The tax is being sold to ignorant rubes who think anyone driving a Tesla is super wealthy. There aren't enough ev to make a difference and this is purely punitive.

The govt can do infrastructure without a miniscule, one-time $1k penalty to ev owners. Can we tax people who have no cars and use public transportation? Those busses aren't hovercraft

I didn't see in the article, anywhere that it mentioned income. I saw that it mentioned that EV owners do not pay gasoline taxes, which go toward maintenance (supposedly; I don't see much road maintenance happening). I also see referenced that they weigh much more than gas/diesel vehicles, so are harder on the roads.

I think that's the "fair share" being referenced. not to tax someone more than someone else. But to make sure that people who are using the service participate in supporting that service.

Some direct quotes from the article mentioning income levels:

- cover the cost for the luxuries of the nation’s elite.

- handouts to our adversaries and high-income individuals

- The days of liberal elites in their expensive EV’s

My Ford lightning likely weighs less than the average f250. Which one has more tearing up the roads?

It's absolutely a punitive tax as displayed by the obvious disdain shown for ev drivers by the authors. How does a one time fee of $1k really do anything if these vehicles are truly tearing up the roads?

Most states already charge a "road tax" for lack of a better term on EVs and alternative fuel vehicles. They shouldn't be exempt from the taxes.

Depending on trim the Lightning and F-250 weight about the same, within a few hundred pounds.

I pay a higher registration. Why should I pay a gas tax if I don't use any? How does a one time fee cover anything over the life of the vehicle?

Gas tax is supposed to pay for road maintenance, please tell me you didn't know this. I'm guess the Feds are planning on getting their portion of the fuel tax in a one time charge instead of annually like FL does when you renew your registration.
