The Atlanta Braves - Hello darkness my old friend

If he spent his entire career in Cleveland, putting up the same numbers, does he get in?
Probably, but maybe not 1st ballot. He should have won RoY (finished 2nd to Ichiro).

One of only 19* pitchers with over 3,000Ks (Kershaw will likely be #20 only needing 32 more), but only the 3rd lefty.

No one in the modern era is getting to 300 wins anymore. I think 250 is the new 300 moving forward and he barely got it (251).

*Only 2 that were eligible and not in the HOF. Clemens (PEDs) and Shilling.

*2 are still active. Verlander and Scherzer (both likely HOFers).

I got no problem with Ichiro being first ballot and nearly unanimous, but it’s almost as if his last several seasons of stat collecting and subpar performances gets ignored like they never happened, yet that seems to be what gets brought up when it comes to Andruw Jones and why he’s not gotten in yet.

Never thought of CC Sabathia as a first ballot
HOFer, damn good career and eventual HoF just not first ballot. So when the media made it sound like a forgone conclusion that he was getting in I was a bit surprised.

CC pre 2000…questionable.

Post 2000? Absolutely deserves to get in.

If Andruw played college ball, didn’t come to the majors till he was 24 and then phased out at 34-35, he would have gotten in already. He gets punished for being so good so young. And the fact he was an absolutely workhorse playing CF and his knees happened to give out.

Bradley Doolittle has a great column about it on ESPN, but the short of it is based on advanced metrics, Andruw’s best 10 seasons are better than Ichiro’s and in the top 99.5% all time.

So much of what the HOF voters look for is convention. They need to have good old school stats (counting stats), a conventional career arc (it's OK if they are bad early on, then peak in their late 20s, then a gradual decline until their mid to late 30s).

In Andruw's case, I think there's guys who hold his batting average against him plus the fact he fell off a cliff after 30.

Same “reasoning” was used against Dale Murphy
