True but they don't get paid when they hold out. A college athlete could quit the team and the collective would still be on the hook to pay them as long as they fulfilled their NIL obligations to the collective.

Yes they do. The fines don’t typically equal the salary earned

Yeah. A couple scenarios:
1) school (or representative) “promised” money, but not in writing, and wasn’t delivered.
2) school did commit money in writing and didn’t deliver
3) school (or rep) “promised” money, but not in writing and it was delivered. However, with current performance the player saw room to renegotiate.
4) school committed to money in writing, delivered, but player is renegotiating based on performance.

My guess is 1 or 3, otherwise UNLV would’ve likely squashed this by now. And due to the record/timing, I’d further guess #3.

Like @05_never_again says….get everything in writing.

On a larger point, if it is #3, then this no longer is NIL, but truly “pay to play,” and that opens up a completely different can of worms.

Based on what I’ve heard about our NIL collective, I’m confident this will never happen to us. It gives your school a terrible look if you can’t deliver on your promise.

If it is NIL $, then he is not being paid to play football. He’s being paid for businesses to use his NIL. The school doesn't pay him, the NIL org pays him. What NIL work was he doing? How was his NIL being used?

Paying kids for playing football, but legally, technically, it isn’t. It’s about compensating an athlete for the use of their name, image, and likeness. How does that play into this mess?

That's why we need to move into a full professional contract model.

I think it's been a thing if they decide they are done with said program. Covid it really blew up with the opt outs. Definitely if you sit out then it's almost a guarantee you can't walk through the locker room doors with teammates if you quit on them. Must go elsewhere or be alienated.

All the NIL stuff is nonsense, they are basically being paid to play. Now, what a formal contract says (in this case only a verbal) is a different matter but the reality is they are being paid to at least show up. In this case, no money no obligation on his part.

To all the people saying “this is college ball now… get used to it…” TN has maybe the most competent NIL collective in the country right now and we’re using this as an advantage to build a deep roster, while other schools are tripping over themselves making deals that they can’t cash out. If you wanna go back to the “good ol days” when Bama and Auburn were dropping bags on elite players and winning championships while UT staggered around trying to compete with guys like Zach Rogers and Mack Crowder then go ahead, keep reminiscing about it. I’m glad this admin has their sights set thru the windshield than in the rear view.
